Massive Increase in Genuine Dyson Spare Part Prices.
« on: September 08, 2016, 05:39:37 pm »
Some may have noticed already that the cost of genuine Dyson spares has just massively increased.

Some parts have gone up over 100%.

It seems to be right across the board. It won't have filtered through to every sales platform as yet, because people are sat on stock they bought at the old prices. But it will in the near future.

We are adjusting prices each day at the moment as we go to restock an item and find it has shot up.

Here is an example:

Standard Dyson clutches on eSpares are now £32.99.

Ours are currently up to £22.50. A tenner cheaper from us as I bulk bought some as soon as I saw this happening. But in time, ours will creep up too.

This is going to have a knock on effect on the folks who service, repair and recondition Dyson machines.

I can't see this having much to do with the $/£ values (there are fewer dollars to the pound than is typical right now) as it has happened too quickly for it to have permeated through to the trade if that were the cause. And in any event, the £/$ weakness is something like 15-20% off typical levels, not 100%. So nobody can credibly blame Brexit.

So the only reason I can see is that Dyson have simply decided they want more money for the stuff if they are going to supply it. Because they can. Which is their right, I suppose. People can buy the stuff or not; I expect they don't really care either way about people repairing machines out of warranty.

It does create an opportunity for the aftermarket to make some spares that might not have otherwise been financially viable, but on the other hand, it may also serve to put some people off repairing machines if the cost becomes prohibitive to do so.

Worth a discussion I thought. As ever, you heard it here first.  :tiphat:

Greed, pure and simple greed  :censored:

Unless the price of plastic has gone up.

The price of plastic is connected with the price of oil, which has fell significantly since US/EU sanctions on Russia (a major oil producer) and the Arab states (and now Iran) overproducing to keep revenue up in a falling market.

Markets take many months to react, and we have seen some very low oil prices the last year or two. We are still enjoying cheap plastics from very low oil prices the last two years.

Also, big manufacturers in South East Asia, like Dyson, generate much money in US Dollars (from US sales) and use that to pay manufacturers of components in South East Asia (despite the Chinese, Russians and others seeking to De-Dollarise), so in my opinion, all arguments about volatile oil (plastic) prices, a weaker pound, Brexit, etc are totally moot. Dyson is making more money paying in US generated dollars to manufacture and sell into the UK market. Prices should be falling here - not rising!

I think what we are seeing is pure capitalism. Or "greed" as some would call it (Gordon Gekko said "Greed is good" - and if you owned Dyson's copyrights and patents, would you put the price up? - I bet yes!"). This ties in nicely with >>this discussion<< which basically outlines how Dyson might prefer if the aftermarket didn't exist.

However, what I think this will do is actually fuel the aftermarket. I'll elaborate why if anyone is interested?

I think it will open up the after market and the cheap and nasty market.  And no if it was me I would not put the price up, but then I am pure socialist, profit it not the most important thing.

As an ex Dyson FSE my thoughts are that the huge price increase is a further drive to push sales of new products instead of repairing older machines. I left Dyson on a principal of the forced sales targets put on field engineers, even being encouraged into misleading customers. The FSE's are fed up of now being a sales team instead of an service team. Many engineers have left as well as area managers and as of last week the national field service manager. I wonder how long field service will last as it only came about because of the CR01. Return to base repairs again?

Their stuff is going up as they restock too. So much has already gone up. We are dancing around all suppliers at the moment and if we fall lucky we order 10 of something instead of 1. But its easy to drop mucho ££s doing that.  :(
