Sue from Cornwall: DC24 Brushroll Motor & PCB Issues
« on: September 28, 2016, 02:16:36 pm »
Hi
This place is great! I was sent here by a helpful chap on You Tube :)
I snuck another hoover into my shed (unimpressed husband!pfft never mind lol)  this one is a dc24 Blitz It that I retrieved from my Mums bin  :icon_nod:
She told me the brush assembly motor had gone for the third time! I ordered a motor and stripped it down only to find it was the PCB that had melted in places.
I've just replaced it with a clean looking second hand one (with reset, the other one didn't have this) tried it out and, well errr the brush bar moved, I think and then sparks flew out of the motor  :o  Stinks!
Maybe the brushes have gone? Could it be the PCB causing the problem? or the knackered motor melted the old PCB? the new one looks fine, reset clicked ok..  I submit! its time to ask the experts...

Thanks for any suggestions :)

If there are sparks from the motor, the motor is kaput.

PCBs can take out the motor and vice versa.

Only use a Johnson motor, some of the aftermarket ones that abound now are pants.

The YouTube chap was me,  Hello!   I'd replace both and knock the issue on the head (for a few years,  until it goes again,  the motors are made of chocolate!)

Ive had a fair few take out both the motor and the pcb,  it gets expensive quickly,  but will ensure it works for a good few years yet.

until the main motor gives out anyway...

New PCBs are unavailable at the moment. Dyson have withdrawn them.

One would hope a good used PCB and a motor will fix Sue's machine.

Hey Sam, keep sending them here from Youtube.  :tiphat:

I keep a few used pcb's in for that reason! (I think you sent them to me as well stu)

I will if they ask questions! Sue commented on my long and rambling dc25 stripdown video,  and I could either have spent half an hour typing a reply,  or just sent her to the one place that will help!

How old is the dc24 now? I hope this isn't the start of their canning from the dyson library? don't think I've seen aftermarket pcb's.  I'm surprised the aftermarket motors aren't up to it,  I'd have thought they could be made better by now. Shame,  an aftermarket motor and pcb for £45 a set would be quite a bargain I reckon! Especially with a new head @£70. I'm sure we could make a one stop 'how to change both' thread and video!

Nobody has done them.

I'm surprised the aftermarket motors aren't up to it,  I'd have thought they could be made better by now.

Johnson OEM ones came first, then two other places did their own cheaper version to fight each other on eBay on price point. That resulted in them being "made to a price", we tried a few and most came back, and we found a design fault on the gear on one type. We only use and sell Johnson now, those who want to save a fiver can get a no name one from eBay and replace it in a month.

I remember one of the 24s I did for you had/has an aftermarket one fitted,  it felt alot lighter than a Dr Johnson one

That was a lesser used YDK version Dyson did I think.

IIRC I seen a DC24 cleaner head service kit the other day for £33ish ON eBay, it consists of a brand new brush motor, sole plate, brush and end cap which I thought was pretty good for the price, sold by Imelectrical IIRC

I'd expect that to be one of the after-market motors. LM has access to both types but when meeting a price point on a platform, you would use the cheaper one.
