Loud Grinding Noise
« on: October 19, 2016, 11:30:41 am »
My Dyson DC04 has just been serviced and now, occasionally, whilst vacuuming, there is a lod 'grinding' noise as if the machine has picked up a nut and bolt (it hasn't). Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this please?

It's possibly/likely to be your clutch needing a refurb. I always describe the sound as a loud ratcheting sound.

You either need to fit a new/refurbished clutch, or refurbish your clutch yourself

Can also be something jamming the clutch.

Much may depend on who serviced it too.

This is true! (you don't live in Oxfordshire do you?)

Thanks for the replies. Now you've said it I would also describe it as a rachetting noise. I'm not in Oxfordshire, I'm in Lancashire. This machine has been brilliant but, there are a few bits that are broken off (still works OK) so I may go for a refurbished machine.

Ah good,  it's not one of my refurbs then! If it was you would message me and I'd have it fixed!

Any repairer worth his salt would have it fixed easily,  but if it's falling apart then maybe it's time to upgrade to a  nice dc07/14?

I'm in Lancashire. This machine has been brilliant but, there are a few bits that are broken off (still works OK) so I may go for a refurbished machine.

Depending where you are in Lancs, you may find us >within reach< (Fetch the old machine with you for appraisal on repair and/or PX). We are on Google maps >here<. We can often do repairs while you wait. We also do machines online >here<.

If Heywood or Salford is easier for you, I can also recommend good places there in case of need.

Could also be the bearings on the brushbar wearing, run with belt off to see if noise is still present.

I'm just outside Wigan so, your place in Manchester isn't too far away. I'll be calling with the machine tomorrow (Saturday)...who should I ask to speak to?

Don't forget to chill in the museum with a coffee or 3 whilst you wait! And ask for a go on the Hoover Junior...

Take a left as you come in the doors and see Claire. She will sort you out.  :icon_nod:

Well, this forum has proved to be invaluable. Machine taken to Manchestervacs and, as suspected, the clutch was at fault. Replacement fitted and other repairs carried out whilst I waited with a coffee. Extremely helpful staff, and informative too. Very, very, reasonable price for the work done. I'll definately be going there again should the need arise. Full marks.

Clutch, brushroll bearing lube, set of soleplate wheels and a nice clean used cleaner head.

Glad all is well, Malc. Thanks for the nice comments; I added them to our testimonials.  :-*
