YDK vs Ametek; The Unreliability Battle
« on: December 30, 2016, 03:00:57 am »
So the question beholds:
Are Ametek motors REALLY unreliable compared to YDK?
And my answer to that is: It depends
In my experience ive had 3 DC04 ametek motors, and 5 dc04 and 07 with YDK motors
Ive had 0 faulty Ametek motors, two of which were thrown out months ago with theodd bits, wish id kept the damn motors though, but those days all i did was remove a bin, plop it on and change a handle,  that was all I would change about couldnt be bothered to learn about pulling the motor etc which is a shame because I miss my old DC04's
If i had thoght at the time i'd kept my early DC04 with a green plug and an YDK sounding Ametek motor, and ploped on it the head and wand from a DC04 I had that had a dc07 head?
Ive had 4 YDK motors go bad
3 Of which were dc07!
1 Of them was a dc04 worked fine but made a rather horrible noise during spin down
another was a dc07 motor that went really noisy
and then there was my old dc07 origin that worked for a second then blew a fuse, after revers connecting the hose from the animal > plugging in the animal> taking the end of the hose and connecting it to the wand of the dead origin I was able to back spin the YDK motor, At once I noticed the casing would light up blue when I fired the motor, this was during a test when I had dissconected the brushroll, I thought it was normal, then few days later the fuses went, wasnt making and horrible noise though, after backrunning the motor via the animals suction I noticed a rather rough sounding noise and SQUEAK!!!
and finally the second animal YDK to go with a change of tone and a rather bad smell of blown motor :underchair:
In my experience YDK are more unreliable than Ametek!
But just because ive had all Ametek motors working forever
and at somepoint all YDK motors blow up doesnt mean that YDK is unreliable
Lets hear your stories of YDK vs Ametek in the Unreliability battle
In my own opinion I prefer the sound of an Ametek motor but also love the sound of a YDK when It changes tone slightly because you recline the machine and engage the clutch.
Personally im an Ametek.
Who are you?

I feel that 110v panasonic motors fitted to american units seem pretty damn reliable. Never had a dead one and brushes seem to last ahwhile too.

Agh that reminds me, the Panasonic YDK style were the 3 buggers that went on the 07's,

I honestly dont know, They were all the original 240V, with original power lead etc, I'd of thought if they were 110v motors thed go instantly with a big cloud of smoke! being double the Volts, Oh wow I just noticed the time 3:37AM

Motors here must be different, they do look different. Not as tall and taper in at the top.

Taran, the UK DC33's were probably the most unreliable vacuum Dyson have ever produced... literally

Good machine but the motors are so crap, even though they perform well. My next door neighbour had one from new and it blew up within a few months, there are more blown up DC33's than most others within the first two years or so of their launch, yet DC14's would last around 5ish years with no problems and neglect

DC33's motors have then been modified, the base is shallower (IDK why) but I had my motor replaced and it's now basically a DC41 motor with a spindle and a different bottom rubber

YDKs are alright, but not for heavy use though IMHO, Ameteks are better for heavy usage I believe.

Most DC01s, all DC03s, DC15s and DC25s all use non YDK motors. How many of them have you seen blown up?
How many DC04 silver lime machines have you seen blown up? They are from 1998-2005 (Between 18 and 11 years old) so that's a pretty good lifespan for a vacuum IMHO. Most people would rather upgrade anyway!

Now there are DC04s, DC07s, DC14s with YDKs, they are of decent quality but don't seem to last as long. If they had a separate cooling fan, fiilter maintenance wouldn't really have much of an effect on the motor, but instead the motor relies on one big fan for the suction and the cooling down.

DC33s are the WORST. The early ones had these weird motors in them, they were YDK but somehow they manage to blow up in less than 2 years of use :/ This has now been rectified BTW to a much  better quality motor. This is basically a spindle on a DC41 motor which is also quieter.

It looks like an Ametek but isnt. There is a photo on the Rotork topic when we stripped ours.

Havent seen too many 33's here. The 17 has a simmilar motor to the 07 but with no spindle and extra terminals.

the 07 motors pretty much the same as a YDK04 but the 07's are 1400w and the 04s are 1200w
