Dyson DC 25 Animal suddenly hard to push
« on: January 16, 2017, 08:38:19 am »
Hi Everyone,

I cannot believe this will be a new topic but I have not seen any previous references/posts relating to my "hard to push" issue with the DC25 Animal.
Our DC 25 Animal is now 7 years old - has been fine - and all the usual elements still work OK.

However, over recent weeks the machine suddenly became very difficult to push over carpets that we have had and vacuumed successfully and easily for years. Then we bought 2 x new carpets and the machine will only travel over them with extreme force!

I have looked for any adjusters to the head but cannot see any.
I have wasted £34 taking it to a local Domestic Appliances Centre for a "service" - same problem persists!

I have contacted Dyson who gleefully told me the machine is well out of warranty and that my problem can only be resolved by an Engineers Callout for £80!
I am reluctant to invest this in a 7 year old machine that only costs around £250 to replace!

I have researched the internet and seen complaints about other Dyson Models doing this and videos / suggestions on drilling air-holes in the head and affixing "furniture slider bars" to the front of the head. But no specific solutions to the DC25 Animal.
I would have given the slider bars a chance but you cannot buy the "US" website linked slider bar for UK delivery!

Does anyone have any similar experience or ideas as to why this has suddenly happened - and how I can fix the problem?

What will an £80 callout Dyson Engineer do?
They won't tell me on the phone!

Is the brushroll still turning when the machine is reclined?

I agree, make sure the brush is spinning. Also, make sure your soleplate is clean. Give it a good wipedown, any residue and grub will cause friction and thus making your vacuum hard to push.

Dose it move OK on the ball without reclining it?

The fact that you are able to write a thread that makes sense and use good grammar gives me the impression that you also care for your Vacuum (Even though it is a Dyson) so I assume you clean the brush roll regularly? Every one to two weeks per say? If you don't it can cause it not to spin and as mentioned above that WILL make it very hard to push especially on higher pile carpets. I personally recommend cleaning the brush roll every other use to obtain maximum performance with every use!

However, you say you have taken it to a shop to be serviced, I expect they left it in the corner while they drank tea and waited for the next fool to walk in so they can take their hard earned cash also, but lets assume they actually serviced it and in which case it should be in perfect working order. Have you tried it on other carpets? For example, you say you have 2 new carpets which have caused this issue but how does it perform on the old carpets? That is assuming you have more than 2 Carpets in your home, if you don't then you can't do that experiment, sadly.
If I were you I'd use my common sense and simply visually check everything, make sure the brush roll does spin, and keeps spinning once it hits the carpet. Also bare in mind, if your new carpets are higher pile then your old ones it will require more force to push over them, that is THE only thing I liked about the Dyson I had, it was very satisfyingly hard to push on my particular carpets.

As for the Dyson engineer, he'll do what you would if you was to do what I mentioned above ^^^ look at it.

I hope you fix this yourself and don't have to spend your hard earned cash.

Have a wonderful night! (If you can sleep knowing your Dyson and carpets don't like each other)

Hi All,

Many thanks to you all for your interest and comments.

Re your questions posted in your replies:
My machine is functioning fine in ALL respects (Main Ball and Beater Bar in Head working OK etc etc..)

The only issue/problem is the fact that the suction has suddenly got so strong against the carpet that you can barely push the machine even over the older more worn carpets that we have had (and vacuumed successfully and easily) with THIS Dyson for years.

Trying to vacuum 2 x new carpets is almost impossible and you get worried you might damage the carpets!!

Something must have changed recently for this to have happened and I am struggling to understand what this is.

Have a look at this photo.

Are the four wheels circled all present and turning?

I can't see the suction getting stronger I'd say it's more a case of the head being closer to the floor. Either that if you have lost some strength... Have you tried weight lifting?

Also the post above is very good idea.

Hi,

All the 4 wheels shown above are present and turning.

Neither my wife or I are imagining it, and neither of us has suddenly become frail and decrepit!
I agree the logic states the head is somehow closer to the floor.

Haha I hope you know I was kidding about the strength.

To be honest everything is how it should be going by what you have told us... I'm not sure if the king of Vacuums MVacs has anymore ideas but you've stumped me...

Yes - it is a strange one - hence my appearance on this forum.

There is a fair bit on the internet about this same type of problem with other Dyson Models - but none I could find about my DC25 Animal.

The most annoying thing is that the Dyson people will offer me my "£80.00 callout Engineer Fix" but will not actually tell me what the problem is!!"

I agree the head probably needs raising to reduce suction - and I have seen an "American You Tube Video" of a guy who claimed to have sorted the issue by sticking a smooth surfaced plastic strip/bar to the front of the head - but I really should not need to be doing that.
There must be some reason for this change of performance.

Dyson seem to know what it is but want £80.00 for the "secret solution"!!

Have you given the base a good wipedown? Also do you have a picture of the base?

Why didn't we think of that? Put a photo of the base up please.

And of course Dyson want stupid money, they're a multimillion pound company what else would you expect? Lol.

I have to admit I have not yet wiped down the base - and it does look pretty mucky/scratched.

Tried to attach photo but exceeds the 750KB post size.

Thanks for your interest.
