Dyson Refurbishing, Is it worth it for the money
« on: January 26, 2017, 07:23:45 pm »
Hey guys,
So my Dads workplace will be moving soon, so many people there will be going redundant and losing their job (Argos warehouse Acton Gate)
Looking into starting his own business kind of thing, Wondered if refurbing Dysons would be good for the money since theres loads going cheap because of a simple fault round us.
so lets say

10-15 pounds for the Vacuum
3.50 - 5.00 pound for Diesel
20-30pound for parts
And then would the resale value make it worth the money? Would it be any good, or would we be better off fixing other things and getting the odd Dyson for me to play about with and then sell on (Once its got the "Elgin seal of refurbishment approval") because Dad would be doing all the stuff since im at school.
Just don't know if its worth it,

Plan for business ATM:
Empty Garage and "Play room"
Turn playroom into office.
Make garage workshop to messabout with all the stuff,
Sell my Mums 2005 Renault Scenic 1.5DCI Dynamique
Mum has Dads 2005 Ford Focus C-MAX 1.6TDCI Ghia
Dad buys a Ford Transit 2.0 Diesel what ever they are, TDI? TDCI? DCI? TDDI?
Make profit from sold on and fully working goods?

Would it be worth the refurb value on a dyson after paying out for the exoenses on it?

You may find >>this article<< interesting.

We are dialling down our refurbed Dysons as there isn't enough money in them for the time that must go into them to make them right. Added to the fact that Dyson have pretty much doubled spare part prices in recent months, means a good refurb DC14 with a proper warranty will soon need to be £125+.

At £215 I can sell a new Sebo X1.1 with a five year guarantee. The jump is less than £100 between the two.

A part timer knocking a few out in his garage can make a few bob still, but will often have to cut corners to make the profit.

Yeah we've looked and its definitaly not worth it, however we will get the odd one or two when they pop up locally that needs a part we have lying around from my nans old machine. Looking at stripping TV's with smashed screens etc. because the TV will be cheap on eBay because the fix is more than likely loads more than tv worth and the board are selling like 30-40 pounds each, so lets say,

5pound for a tv working but smashed screen, because thats how they are going,
2-5 pound for diesel for the van
and finally sell on profit- one board inside can be around 50 pound, so straight away theres a profit there.

It is a shame because of the excellent performance from a decent Dyson, like my DC04 does lots better than my DC07

The DC07 should clean better
Madrat you're definitely Homer Simpson :))  Homer sometimes goes negative, there is still money in Dysons, people would still rather have a refurb Dyson if it's got a guarantee

My 07 cyclones are absolute rubbish;
clean them out day 1,
use the 07 on day 1,
day 2 the cyclones blocked again?

All it does is pick up normal household dust

Get a later cyclone with the number 2 by the cyclone exit hole gasket.

We have loads of DC04 parts lying around my house, and a DC07 Animal head lol, we usually go down to this guy who lives in burntwood round the corner from me and he sells "Refurbished 100% wroking Dyson's" Will be shown working to buyer he says, well we picked one DC04 for 15 pound and he said it does work look, He just turned it on and pushed it along his driveway, unplugged it, threw it at us and said here you go. smelt soo bad of dog and allsorts of nastys, I think we would use him for machines to nik the parts from, since they are all good (mostly) just smelly

My origin used to be a 2, it was amazing till the motor blew and I part-ex it for a DC04 Absolute, then a few months later what is now my 07 Animal (was my dads) motor blew, it has cyclones 1, Shame really. could of always droped a clutch and new motor in my origin then its practically the same machine but with the better cyclones

I would never try to make a business out of it sadly, as much as I would like to. I make some cash doing it, but man maths does help explain the figures. Plus I can do it at home, so no cost to run it.

Being picky with machines helps, I don't buy job lots anymore, just the odd £10 machine that needs new filters and a full stripdown and refurb, then sell it for £60. Even then if I charged for my time it would never work out, but I write that part off as 'enjoyment' and everyone's happy!
