Miele S716 problem
« on: February 07, 2017, 05:23:05 pm »
Hoping that somebody may be able to offer some advice with a problem I have with a 13 year old Miele S716 Cat and Dog 1800w.

The vacuum has worked flawlessly up to about 2 weeks ago when it started to, what I can only describe as, hunting up and down or staying at a very slow speed.

Thanks to beko 1987's very concise strip down proceedure of a similar machine, I have carried out a thorough inspection, even stripping the motor apart to look at the brushes.

The motor is squeaky clean, there is approx 2.5 cms left on each brush, I am unable to see any problem on the board which is mounted to the motor, I have cleaned it with contact cleaner anyway.

I suspect that the problem might be on the main switch unit board which incorporates a potentiometer to vary the motor speed, again, I have cleaned this board with contact cleaner and as far as I can see there does not appear to be any obvious defect, unless the pot itself is faulty.

Has anybody come across this problem ?, there are a few examples of this fault displayed on You Tube, but no info on what might be the problem, is this type of board available anywhere as a replacement.

I would appreciate any help which is available as I am very loathe to have to replace this machine, thanks.

Mmmm it does sound like the potentiometer, but it could be capacitors, or filters, or anything on that board tbh, but possibly more likely the potentiometer. You seem like the sort of chap with a fair few ounces of common sense (demonstrated by you troubleshooting it to the level you have already, bravo!), so see if you fancy doing the below...

It's been a while since I've had the S7 in my thread, but you could try and hard wire it together (I think...)

From memory, the 3 wires going to the motor are live (brown), neutral (blue) and data (black). The black wire is what adjusts the voltage/speed/amount of cheese fed through the wires... Those 3 wires (from what I can see in my pictures) run throughout the machine, so in theory, connect the blue from the cord rewind to the blue of the motor, then the brown, tape it all off to stop it shorting out, then re-assemble the machine.

(I'd put it in the garden just in case I am terribly wrong) and plug it in and turn it on, it should* turn straight on and run at full power. This would tell you if it's the motor or the PCB. PM/Wait for Autovac to come on, she has knowledge of the wires as she tested some motors a while ago and worked out which was live and neutral, but from memory it was those two.

Once the motor is confirmed working, there's nothing to stop you from connecting the switch up inbetween the live cables and having it just on and off, you might need some butt connectors or male and female crimps, but that would bypass the whole pcb bit and you would just have an on and off vac.

The prices for the PCB don't shock me, Miele are renowned for having eye wateringly high prices, hell for half that the PCB in this is probably* the same http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MIELE-Complete-C1-Cat-Dog-Extreme-PowerLine-Cylinder-vacuum-unit-only-/282331827181?hash=item41bc49cbed:g:HCoAAOSwt5hYgU63

You could possibly replace the potentiometer, I did the same with my Electrolux Dolphin 4x4 (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2013.0.html), and after a few days of hunting about googling part numbers got 2 on ebay for under a fiver delivered. It wasn't entirely the same as it does not have the same degree of movement but it does the job. Having had the same issue with my Hoover Galaxy, stuttery motor performance, even worse when adjusting the speed, contact cleaner fixed that, but that was certainly the pot. However you could do all that and it be something else entirely!

Best of luck anyway chap!

Thanks to RustySkull for the links, I expected that if the board was available, it would be very expensive, thanks also to beko1987 for your input, I was hoping you'd show up.

I had already considered wiring up the motor directly, but was a bit unsure of which colour was which, anyway thanks to your info it put my mind at ease as to which ones to connect to the motor.

I wired the motor directly to the mains last night and it runs perfectly at full tilt, so I have today bypassed all the internal gubbins and the vacuum is running quite happily, it will only be used for an hour or so tomorrow with this arrangement.

I have decided not to purchase  a new board from either of the links, I managed to find a place in Germany which sells refurbished Miele stuff on Ebay, they had the complete rear unit with board attached for my cleaner for the princely sum of £49 delivered, it's already on its way via DHL.

If I still lived where I used to up to 8 years ago, I would have been able to take the suspect board to a chap I knew and he'd have been able to repair it, he was an absolute miracle worker with anything like that, sadly there are very few people still about who can do these things, throwaway society and all that, God bless her, my dear wife can't understand why we don't just buy a new cleaner, she seems to have forgotten that my middle name is frugal, ha ha.

I shall report back after I've received and fitted the part, thanks for everyone's contribution, much appreciated, hopefully in the future anybody having the same problem, will find this thread and be helped.

Dave

Fantastic, glad you at least confirmed the motor was fine! It's a shame you don't know anyone who could troubleshoot the board, but tbh unless their fine with payment by a slab of beer, even the hourly rate to troubleshoot it would run to more than you paid!

You'll be fine using it for more than an hour like that, it's fine at full pelt usually I presume?

Anyhoo, top props for fixing it! Should last many more years now!

hopefully in the future anybody having the same problem, will find this thread and be helped.

There is a man who understands the nature of forums.

I did put the topic on social media, and here is also one reply I got:

Quote
Pots can get damaged by dust and capacitors are the most likely part on a board to fail. However, i had an old Miele in the other day, the thermostat on the cob attached to the motor has failed.

The thermal cut out on the motor is weak, ive had one like that, although it had blown a track off the pcb, and fixable with a bit of solder.

That's why I wanted the motor hooked up on its own,  to rule that out. (I saw that reply on social meejia too)
