Hi.  I have a DC31 to refurbish.  When I first got hold of it , it was not charging so I replaced the charger, which worked.  However it was cutting out after a few seconds use. In my first attempt at taking it apart I removed the plastic plate at the bottom of the unit to expose the wires that connect the switch to the contacts.  I didn't see anything to do there so put it back together, and now it works fine on normal power but still cuts out after a couple of seconds on high power.  I suspect the TOC to be at fault.  My questions are:

1.  does anyone / everyone agree that it could be the TOC?
2.  If it is the TOC, how do I get at the darned thing to replace or bypass it?
3.  Does anyone have any pics of a dismantled DC31 to show me what I'm looking for?

Many thanks in advance,
Rich.

Check the charger is putting out 2 different voltages at the jack plug, one on the centre pin and one on the inner part. If that all ok you need a new battery

Thank you.  The charger is brand new so I've ordered a battery.  I'll let you know if that does the trick.

Do you happen to know if getting into the motor etc. is the same procedure as the DC35?  I've seen tutorials for those being dismantled but nothing for the DC31.

They should be much the same. We never delve into the motor casing on cordless machines, but they are similar enough.

It is usually the battery.

Thanks to you both.  The battery was indeed the culprit.
