Thanks again to everyone for your helpful suggestions. Things have moved quickly - I spotted a DC50 on ebay in the locality. For £50 it was mine. It's now in the kitchen awaiting a proper 'get to know you' session. I'll have to look for the instructions online.

I did groan to myself when I started looking at all the picture instructions, but cheered up when I found some actual words underneath!I have rinsed out the top filter and removed the one in the ball. This second one looks like it's made of paper - does it really need rinsing out under a tap? Won't it disintegrate? (Edit to add: it's a DC50 ErP if this makes a difference)

It should last the lifetime of the machine
not from my machine, the old machine it came from, However had no choise but to use it since I have no others, Probs gonna order one from Manvacs soon
