Bugs: Have you run into them when fixing/refurbing?
« on: March 10, 2017, 05:29:11 pm »
As the title states, I'm curious if any of you (especially those of you at shops) have run into a bug infestation when fixing vacuums.  I started trolling craigslist as well as other swap sites looking for cheap Dysons to fix and it wasn't long before my wife raised the concern of beg bugs/lice/roaches/fleas in the machines.  I'm a homeowner with two very small children, so that's a scary thought...  I would have to flip 10 Dysons to pay the exterminator!  :angryman: :)) :boggleeye:

Ive had multiple used Dyson DC04/DC07/DC14 and none have ever had any in, and rarely see any at all in machines, They are in them on some YouTube vids but its quite rare to find any in.
Refurbishing / servicing the Dyson is a wonderfull idea, recenltly one abandoned in a field near me for about 2 weeks now, probaly gone, need to send Madie (My friend) to check again since she found it. If its still there then I need to contact some people to save it! Dyson's are worth refurbishing, don't sell all too well since people want NEW machines but if you refurb them to a like new specification and have some good prices then i'm sure youll get some interest

Glad to hear that.  It's logical to assume they would be in there, but who knows.  I've vacuumed up enough ants to know they rarely survive the trip.

Don't take that Dyson!  Someone loved it, it worked hard for many years and now they've put it out to pasture.  Anyway, the best you could do with it is make it into glue.

It's funny you mention that people only want new ones.  I check craigslist every other day and it's amazing how skewed everything is.  DC07's listed for $200USD, DC24's with an immovable brush bar from owners demanding $40USD who curse you out if you offer 25, DC14's for $150-$300.  Anything "animal" is +$50.  Yet, none of them sell.  It's the same ads (across multiple platforms, no less) at the same prices... for months.  None selling, no one willing to drop the price, lower offers are insults.  They're convinced their 10 year old vacuum, which likely needs many parts and significant elbow grease, will fetch a premium because it was once an expensive machine.  Reminds me of car shopping a while back.  New Honda Civic: $18,000.  Used Honda Civic, 10 years old in the rust belt with 160,000 miles: $16,000.

Beko1987 on this forum had a Miele vacuum and when he took out the bag there was a massive rat which ran out, and it gave birth to 3 mice inside the bag compartment :o

I had a DC14 Blitz it off eBay with a blown motor. Upon disassembly, I noticed a dead spider in the cleaner head, removed. Then in the motor housing there were two creepy insects which were alive and ran out! They looked like silverfish. Then another one was in there as well, like a 1cm long thing with legs ehh

Probs was stored in a shed

Our workshop did once have fleas out of someone's machine. Our tech was sulking he had been bitten a few times. Made him tidy up and vacuum the desk and surrounding area though............

Lol yes, the mouse miele. It was fine, I hadn't taken it into the house, we took the mice to the local animal place who told eva (she was 3 at the time) that they would be looked after and released into the wild.

I reckon they just fed them to a snake or hit them with a hammer or summat. Still got bits of that miele around somewhere, it was scrap!

It was a mouse. We were forced to move out of our first flat due to rats. Mice I can deal with, rats need killing with fire

I used to keep rats as pets, they are fantastic, like little dogs.

Funnily I found my first bug in a Dyson I was refurbing - it was our DC14 Animal, Who knows how it got in there since its constantly stored in my room with all my other vacs in my collection. Wasn't much just a very tiny spider. think he was dead, so grabbed my DC04 De Stijl and sucked him up, then emptied what was a well overdue an empty bin into the bin
