Hello my vacuum cleaner chums! You all OK?

Clearing the writeup backlog a bit here, apologies for that. This is one of the machines sent to me by Stuart a good while ago

ila_rendered

This was supposed to have a little bet resting on it, but I wasn't too happy with how that came out, as you will see later. But these photo's were taken before any of that came about, so let's see what we are dealing with!

As per the utterly lovely U1346 - https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2617.0.html it was in a bad way, although made worse by the fact that it had seen paint in it's life

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The first thing to go was the horrible replacement bag (well, not go, it was washed and not replaced, it's in the airing cupboard as I type this incase it comes in handy one day)

ila_rendered

A few weeks later after sorting the bag, I bought the machine inside to strip down

It really is in a bad way

ila_rendered

The handle came off first, the bolts were replaced with brand new parts

ila_rendered

Followed by the bag holder, which was also replaced with a new item

Because under all this paint the plastic was very crumbly

ila_rendered

I'd left the bag bottom strap on so I didnt loose it, so that came off

ila_rendered

Fill tube removed and split

ila_rendered

Lower handle removed

ila_rendered

And the painted rubber removed

ila_rendered

Onto the machine now

ila_rendered

Sadly the Hoover roundel is damaged

ila_rendered

One theme on this rebuild is Rust...

ila_rendered

Clip removed

Let's have a peek under the motor cover...

ila_rendered

Not as bad as the other one

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Rear wheels and axle removed and split

ila_rendered

And onto the handle bail

ila_rendered

Which had an issue that I've come across before, a seized screw

ila_rendered

I carded it to remind me to go through my pot of Junior spares and get a better one

ila_rendered

The handle bail was a mess of many layers of paint and grease

I hit it with a hammer and it fell apart quite neatly

ila_rendered

However this part is scrap

ila_rendered

And has been silver at some point it seems

ila_rendered

I dug out the mains cable screws

ila_rendered

And removed the cable. The guide has even been painted ffs

ila_rendered

Brushroll next

ila_rendered

End caps off

ila_rendered

Some string unwound

ila_rendered

The wobble washers were buried deep in the end cap greb

The bearings and brush strips went in the bin

ila_rendered

The centre belt guard was exhumed next

ila_rendered

Front wheels next

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The whole inside of this machine is silver

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Switch needs to be removed

ila_rendered

And we can hoik the motor out

Whoever refurbished this way back when missed this screw out when re-assembling

ila_rendered

So I removed the other two and took the metal bulkhead out

ila_rendered

Silver turning to beige

ila_rendered

Showing the remains of paint and corrosion

ila_rendered

I removed the old brushroll retaining springs

ila_rendered

Onto the motor now

ila_rendered
God that's an awful picture, sorry!

First the supressor needs to come off

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Then remove all the wires

ila_rendered

If you're wanting guidance to rebuild a Junior motor, look at the other Junior thread, that covers it in much more detail! This one is quite lite as the main aim isn't the mechanicals...

Wires and switch removed

ila_rendered

Casing split

ila_rendered

Looking good deep down

ila_rendered

Carbons are really good

ila_rendered

Nice greasy dirt build up here

ila_rendered

I've seen this before as well, it's why my 262 barely ran when I first got it, the oily filth had got onto the coil, disrupting the smooth flow it should have

ila_rendered

The fan was a little bit worn, perfectly servicable though

ila_rendered

I pulled both ends of it all and it fell apart in my hands

ila_rendered

All the grease had fallen out over the years

ila_rendered

Motor done, it's back to the cosmetics, and I got the drill out

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

and removed the height adjustment wheel and front baseplate

ila_rendered

I also popped the cable grommit out

ila_rendered

I got my shite dremel out and got the worse of the rust off

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

I had half hoped it would clean up enough to be polished up and left as metal, but the pitting was too bad

I also scrubbed the coil up with the sandpaper whel

I popped to toolstation and got some rust remover

ila_rendered

And lobbed all the small rusty things in it

ila_rendered

Which worked well. It was all rinsed in white spirit, then water, dried, wire wooled smooth then painted in white!

ila_rendered

I had thought about colour combo's, did some rubbish sketches, and decided on...

ila_rendered

The underside of the hood in black, with the firewall just cleaned and polished up, with all the other bits of metalwork in contrasting white

ila_rendered

I painted the brushroll black too so it blended in

ila_rendered

The inside of the hood was nice and glossy

ila_rendered

Once I was sure I liked the colour, I sealed the firewall in

ila_rendered

I cleaned off the height adjuster wheel and re-fitted it

And riveted it onto the hood

ila_rendered

The outside of the hood was painted white, so a black and white contrast

ila_rendered

With the motor in the underside looks quite nice. The front axle went black though, as white was just too much of a contrast

ila_rendered

The outer side was not quite how I had hoped though, the paint went textured when sprayed, which tbh I thought looked quite good so left it, the alternative was sanding it all back off again and re-spraying, and it was winter by this point, so spraying was a pain.

ila_rendered

To re-fit the cable exit grommit, I heated it up in boiling water

ila_rendered

And in it popped

ila_rendered

I then fitted the cleaned up bumper. Looks slightly strange in it's natural colour, but it matches all the other rubbers, and adds some originality to it (plus if I had painted it it would have looked awful)

ila_rendered

To sort out the damaged roundel, I stuck a new one over the top

Finished off the wiring underneath

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

This is actually the second handle set. I originally tried black, but it looked crap, plus as I am the worlds worst spray painter, the finish was god awful. So I started again on a fresh handle and it was much better, although not perfect

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Because I love Stu very much, I delved into my special box of special stuff the box of shite under the bench in the shed and found a clean, genuine HOOVER bag in the proper blue

ila_rendered

On the big man himself's request, a brand new 3 core black cable was fitted (putting aside the earthing of a non earthed machine...)

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

I earthed it off the handle bail

ila_rendered

Motor cover back on

ila_rendered

When Stu initially sent me the machines, he sent me a load of random spares for Juniors too, so I cracked them out. Bag hook first

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Along with new bolts

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And it's done! Hopefully the cord will sit a bit better with time. Sadly just by winding it on and off a few times marked the paintwork though

I forgot to find and fit a cord clamp at the bottom, should have one somewhere, I need to send it oop north

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

What does it sound like? Well, before:

And after:

(For some reason the after video has an odd URL which the youtube link button does not like...)

So, sounds beautiful, doesn't look too bad, but one more job to do, which is make the belt guard shine like a mirror!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Finished!

Myself and Stuart did have a little bet on with this, that he couldn't sell it for £100 to some yuppie type, but once it was finished, I have to say it would never be sellable for that much, so the bet was off. Maybe if you come across a Junior that hasn't seen paint, we can try again, but my painting skills are not good enough to get the finish, and sending it off for professional paint would cost so much it would not be worth it. Where does it sit in the shop now Stu? Or did you lob it in the skip by now?

Either way, it was fun to do, but did re-inforce my theory that machines like this are fit for either mechanical restoration and just using and abusing, or breaking for spares and not bothering with. I certainly skip them if their not cheap enough when I see them locally!

Either way though, I hope you enjoyed reading, and goodnight!

Ahh, it was the brown one I kept. As you said, the paint didnt sit right on this one and not as we both intended, and the cost came out quite high with all the couriering, etc. As the cable clamp never arrived, I ended up moving it along as was. I think we know now to use more original ones next time.

Shame it was painted, that always ruins any project like this before its started.  You did a good job though Beko.
