Changing clutch belts, how difficult?
« on: March 15, 2017, 09:49:18 pm »
I am wanting to re-belt a few clutches seeing as it's so much cheaper than a replacement clutch. How hard is it? Any tips?

fiddly but doable. Plenty of how to videos on you tube and links on this site, if the white wheel is black then you need a new one, available from MV  Tiny circlip is a pain and can fly off never to be seen again. A spacer to compress shaft is a god send, anything small and solid will work and a screwdriver with interchangeable bits, with no bits fitted makes fitting the aforementioned circlip easy, even better if its magnetic.

There is a topic on the subject with videos.

We also have the white wheels in stock in case of need.

I bought a replacement clutch for my DC14 a while back.  Recently, I changed the belts in the old clutch as well as the clutch in a DC33.  Not hard at all.  I would say the entire process took 10 minutes each while watching TV.

The biggest problem was getting the c clip off without damaging it (without the proper tool, that is.  I used a small flatblade and the clip paid the price.).  All I needed was a T10 torx, a larger (1cm dia) and smaller (0.5cm) flat blade, some grease and a cloth.  A knife is handy to speed up taking off the belts.  8)

That's not a bad idea!  That must be the Japanese ingenuity I keep reading about.

(I know you're not Japanese, I just saw you getting razzed about that elsewhere on here ;D :underchair:)

I tried replacing the clutch belts on my dc04 but lost the little circlip so decided to buy a used clutch instead then happened to find the circlip a few days later i used Quаltex belts which where cheap another problem is stretching the new belts over the motor shaft and brush it took me a good amount of time and swearing before i got them on but defiantly worth the time and money to recycle a old clutch i also greased the ball bearings when i had it apart which i dont know if that was the right thing to do but it seemed to make it turn smoother.

Big long flat blade screwdriver for motor shaft, belt tool for brush bar.
