1988 Electrolux 612 Electronic - Stripdown and Refurbishment

Hi! Some years ago now (09/01/2015 looking at the first picture  ) I won this from ebay for 99p!



Initially I was excited, but when I got it back to my mums for a proper look, it was not all good. The brushroll was melted at one end and fully shot



The plastics were in dire need of a polish



The handle was broken



But the baseplate was pretty good



The ratings plate dates it to week 34 1988, a mere few months younger than me!



Looking at the pictures available to me I seem to have removed the base plate



Removed the ruined belt



And had a closer look at the brushroll to see if it was saveable

It wasn't...



Sadly, these brushrolls (They fit the 600 series, Contour, Glider and Airstream, and the Dirt Devil 6110) are hens teeth, so it went into the back of the shed for a long time

Until last month infact!



Because, amazingly, someone was selling 12 BRL21's, so I grabbed 2 (one for a contour I have had for a while...). (Stu, if you hear of Q finding loads of these, get them! The 12 sold out within 2 weeks @ £13 a go plus postage...)

Speaking of the handle, this sticker is interesting. Not to me (well, slightly), but to a member of our pages, Sebo Steve, or Mr Steve Green, Manchestervac's friendly* Sebo area rep! Apparently he used to work at this very vacuum cleaner shop back in the day before reaching the heady heights of working for Sebo with a company 320d and mobile phone, he may have even touched this VERY vacuum. Sadly it was peeling of, so I removed it, but here it is for prosperity!



I did try to split the handle fully but it's not meant to, so I left it



The holder for the missing crevice tool pops out easily

Moving down now, and the bag door comes off



The bag full indicator comes out



And splits down for cleaning as it's full of dust!





The latch pops out from the top, the metal bar provides it's self returning spring



The bag door seal comes out as well



This bag was in it when I got it, and well fit for the bin now!



Under here should be some wires

Working from the top, the speed control knob lifts off



And splits down slightly



The power button and it's surround lifts out too



Time to undo the wiring



The mains cable comes in at the front right of the block
Opposite that is a neutral that runs to the motor, and a live to one side of the switch.
From the switch the live goes to the PCB, which comes out again and through the choc block to the motor.
The supressor connects over the neutral, with an earth that goes straight to the motor and earths there
Simple!



Very common electrolux switch this is



Mains cable removed



and once the motor wires are undone the pcb and speed module can be removed



Made in Tyne & Wear, rather than happy factory 5 in china!

With all that removed, the spinal cable can be pulled out and down



The mains cable grommit pulls out too



The bag latch pulls out of the bag compartment



And we are done up the top! So onto the bottom



The baseplate has to come off first. The screws are identical to DC01 soleplate screws and retaining washers, just flat head not philips



I popped the metal gliders off





And removed the brushroll



Now this took some figuring out, but 4 screws hold an internal chassis in place, which lifts out and makes the hood fall off too

The chassis holds the wheels, height adjustment mechanism and release pedal



The height adjuster knob unscrews from the assembly



The rear wheels are removed by pulling the axle out, not even a circlip needed as it's all held together when the chassis is in place



This part sort of fell out, but it's what makes the front wheels move up and down according to the surface being cleaned



Once that is removed, the front wheel assembly comes out



All 4 wheels slide off



The release pedal is sprung by this spring, which hooks underneath the chassis



With that released the pedal pops out of it's pivots.

Which doesn't really hold too much, the furniture guard comes off



As does this belt guard



And that's it! Now, we can open the motor cover!



The suction duct sits infront of the fancase, and lifts out



The motor itself then lifts out



Last out is the pre motor filter holding cage



Onto the motor itself, the bracket that holds it steady on the belt spindle side is removed, as are the seals



Sadly, Electrolux motors from the 500 series until the airstreams, both cylinder and uprights (dolphin motors are the same, just without the belt spindle) are non servicable, you can't componentise them as you can Hoover's motors, however, you can pop the two clips and remove the top part of the motor



And get to the bearings, which you cannot remove as the flat end stop is crimped onto the end of the belt spindle... Luckily these were not completely shot, and responded well to a good soak in 3 in 1 oil and a clean up, which is all that can be done.

On 500 series motors, there is a spring around the ends of the fans which does something to improve suction, but also has a great reputation for clogging up with fluff and killing all the suction, so I removed the dry tape and lifted the fancase off



And found no spring. Oh well, I refitted it with nice fresh tape



And with the motor spinning very smoothly now, washed and dried all the plastics. Then, gave them a polish



And cleaned the plug up





First back in was the pre motor filter holder



Then it was time to open some nice new old filters



One of which had gone a bit crumbly



But the other one was fine

Mum had one of those, handle snapped clean off in the end. Dad and I took the floor plate off used the height adjuster to cover the motor shaft and turned it into a cylinder machine, we used it in the caravan at Caister for years.

I fitted the new post motor filter too



And put the cover on



Next, it was time to rubber up the motor



Fit the holder



And dropped it in



Running the cable up to the top



Hood now, and the bumper is fitted



As is the belt guard



Inner chassis now, release pedal replaced

And popped the spring back



Middle wheels assembled with a nice smear of grease to stop them squeaking



And fitted to the holder



Floaty springs fitted



With the white part (which, thinking about it actually pushes the wheels down when put into upright mode to lift the brushroll off the carpet when using the tools!) fitted



Height adjuster fitted



The hood is laid in place, with the suction duct for the brushroll housing fitted



A smear of grease on the rear wheel axles as well as the main machine pivots and the inner chassis is screwed down

Metal plates back in with a tiny bit of bending about





And fitted!



Down here is done!



Bag holder fitted



And the wiring and grommit can start to go back in



I de-supressored it



Because it was starting to bulge

Wired up



Controls fitted

And popped the cover on



The cleaned and plumper bag door seal went on



latch refitted



And the bag full indicator reassembled and fitted



I glued the handle back together and fitted the tool holder



and put everything else on



And that was that!

And that was that! I put it on ebay using the above pictures, with a pack of genuine bags and filters I had lying around, starting it at £19.99 to cover costs, and put what I thought was a fairly silly buy it now on, well blow me if someone didn't hit the button not 24 hours later for £75 plus £15 post! Result! The chap used to repair them back in the day (there's a pattern here) apparently and fancied one again for nostalgia. So I boxed the crap out of it and it arrived safely and I presume he is very happy with it!

And I'm very happy with it too!

Madrat, how could you let your parents do that to such a lovely cleaner? For shame...

The poxy hepaflo type Airstram bag I thought would fit popped off during that though, so I had to spend 10 minutes with the DC40 which I got that day cleaning it all back out, luckily it was only light dust and came right off!
