DC07 Suction TOO strong!
« on: June 12, 2017, 07:15:37 pm »
Weird problem , a couple of weeks ago we noticed the above on our DC07 Origin.
It's lifting up the carpet and cushion flooring neither of which are new.
It was suggested that the raised splines on the Sole Plate could cause this If they are worn (ours are) so first I built these up using small strips of duct tape which seemed to do the  trick.
So I've changed the sole plate for a new one but its still too strong - my wife cant push it when its powered up.
Could a worn brush cause this ie the spinning brush raises the sole plate up slightly reducing suction.
Any help appreciated.

Take off the soleplate, remove the thin rubber sealing strips, refit it and see if that improves it. That's what we usually do.

As mvacs said - remove the soleplate seals. worn brush wouldn't cause more suction, it would cause less performance.

Hi Madrat, yes there ok , its only when the suctions on that its hard to push.
I can manage but the wife struggles.
I'm going to stick some tape strips under the new sole plate to see what happens.

Very strange, did it just suddenly go like this? Is the filter in properly?

Might be worth a look.  Someone I know put a HEPA filter in upside down and it didn't seal.  Suction was noticeably stronger....

Sorted it drastically though but the story so far.
In total here's what I've replaced (some parts were changed even though I knew they wouldn't cause the suction fault but they were on the way out anyway).
Both filters,
new rear hose and wand handle as old hose was duct taped up years age and wouldn't come out of the handle!,
new bin flap as clip had broke on one side,
new drive belt as old one had expanded and was allowing the base assembly to drop down, slightly on its side pivots and in turn allow the belt guard to catch and not return into position.
New brush roller as old one was badly scored and had miles of cotton and carpet threads around it that I couldn't be  arsed to clean it!
Finally the soleplate.
After all this my wife still couldn't cope with it so I did what I tried at first and raised the new soleplate up by sticking strips of cushion flooring onto the soleplate, this works as it slightly breaks the seal between the carpet/kitchen floor but still sucks up dirt. The drawback is that they would eventually fall off.
So I bit the bullet and experimented with drilling holes in the rear vertical wall of the old soleplate (as seen on YouTube) then after finding what size worked best put one 8mm dia hole into the new one - voila!
My wife can now push it around and it vacuums ok.
One thing worth mentioning is that I contacted Dyson at first and though all they seemed to want do was sell me a service call, they did say that the suction can increase if the motor is getting close to replacement. Two Manchester repair shops said they had not heard of this before hence I went down the soleplate route but I have noticed marks on the old belt like melting and the motor shaft is extremely hot after using the vac for a few minutes is this heat normal?

How they are.

Not really.  :))

So I'm trying to figure out what logic they had when coming up with this.  Is there anything real world which would back this up?  I can't imagine what, but I'm also not an engineer...

The only thing I can think of is if you block the suction the amount of power the motor uses decreases but that's nothing to do with it  :-\

I would of said that the suction would decrease if motor was dieing
