Hi Everyone,

The brushroll on my sisters DC14 ( non-clutched ) was not working. I offered to replace the belt. When I removed the footplate I could see the belt was not broken. I removed the brushroll and the ends were stuck ridged, so I took them off, removed a lot of dirt, then sprayed the metal rod with a little WD40. I replaced the brushroll and put a new belt on anyway as the old one was very stretched. I turned it over, plugged it in tilted it on my knee and turned it on. It worked great, the brushroll was turning, but after a minute, black smoke, which didn't smell of burning was coming out the bottom at the area of the belt!!!
I turned it of and when I removed the footplate the belt felt very hot. Is this normal? Any help or advice would be gratefully received, thanks.

I would say the bearings need a good clean and re grease or renewing, also check the brush-bar where the belt sits it could be worn preventing the new belt from gripping.

Thanks Madrat, once it had cooled the brush wouldn't turn again, so I will order a new brushroll from Manchestervacs, it's obviously knackered and the rod was a little rusty at the ends anyway,  but thanks so much for you help.

You can pop the plastic caps off the bearings (use the rod end to pop them out) and work grease in until they spin again

A new brushroll is alot easier though!

What state is your white clutch wheel though?
