hi does anybody know why the pre-motor filter is located in cyclone assembly like the dc04 when there appears to be an option for the filter to be located as per the 07 machine . got into to quite an argument with another dyson seller. ie told her there was no bottom filter , just an inspection cover also argued to the point of fact, that the newer dc14 machines inspection cover release clip has been omitted . her reply was they have just been snapped off. might be interesting to see if 07 filter could be adapted to fit ,and how well machine would perform. ( after cyclone filter has been removed of course)

Hi Doughnut. Welcome to the site.

The location where you would have a filter on a DC07 is not designed to take a filter on the DC14. I don't think retro fitting one there would offer any benefit that the one in the cyclone top doesn't. As long as the air is filtered somewhere before it goes through the motor, does it matter where?

The aperture will be there because the DC14 uses many parts from the DC07. It will have been cheaper than totally redesigning it is my guess.

hi thanks for reply , thoughts came about for retro fit filter mainly because most dc 14,s i have refurbished tend to have worn out motors, this seems to be less of a problem on older dc04 and dc07 machines have a theory that grit etc is being sucked through apeture ie directly into motor vanes . hmm perhaps glueing cover in place could be the answer. also
another issue seems to be hepa filter which if left unchecked chokes, and shortens motor life this seems to apply to all dysons fitted with hepa filters.

The shorter motor life on 14's may be because the motor has to work harder with that cyclone design. I agree the HEPA clogs and shortens life; we fit mostly filter pads to 14's for this reason, and we always fit new motors to 14's too.

Our pal Vacuum Clean House in SA did a speed test I recall on 14's and has a theory about the motor and the cyclone design. Its late in SA now so he will probably see the topic tomorrow.

You rebuild a few machines yourself then?

What I find interesting is that on the couple of dc14 standard ( with out brush control) that i have seen here, have the little release catch fitted to all dc07's , I have to wonder why this is.

One of the main reasons I can see of moving the filter from the side of the motor ( dc07 ) to inside the cyclone unit ( dc14) was that the filter could be bigger in size.

It is interesting to note that the new dc27's and 33's have there filter located on the side agian.

The cyclone on the dc14 makes the motor spin much faster than on the dc07 thus it works harder and fails faster

I do also think a bit of it is down to how the machine is looked after. I find that customers who have the dc07 tend to look after them more than customers of dc14's . they always come in bashed and smashed That is my opinion though

hi thanks for the welcome
quite an interesting site rebuilt quite a few machines and over period of time have got to know the pit falls, favourite machine has to be the 04 these are bomb proof. most disliked machine being the 05 motorhead and dc 11 these are a pain to rebuild.
will try to contribute as much as time will allow.

Wait untill you have to change the yoke assembily on a dc25 or have to change a motor on a dc27 both lovely machines but man what a job and all the pieces from the dc25 take up two work benches !
