Earlier in the year, I get mentioned in a facebook comment. Something about a ratty old vacuum coming my way for a refurb. Whatever, nae bother!
Via Dilys at Autovac, I recieved a parcel back in August!
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8k3oAGb7vU
It was a wonderful beast
Very Orange
Looked very at home by my parent's 1970's fireplace, on their 1970's carpet!
But it needed to be moar orange, so home it came, looking very out of place on our modern carpet!
First things first, remove the cable
Then remove the bag
The top handle screw incorporates the later style top cord hook, so removing the nut allows the whole thing to drop off
The holder can be removed from the cable guide
The handle nut sits in a groove to stop it turning when assembling

And the top handle can come off!
Apart from a tiny chip in the cord hook, it was in very good condition, no work needed here bar a clean and polish!
The bottom handle part was slightly more worn when it came off, decades of not being tight enough probably
Packed out by this ancient bit of card
Next, the carry handle cover needs to be removed
Revealing a cable join
Which handily slides right out
Mains cable clamp is removed first
Then everything else is undone/falls out to leave an empty shell. One of the captive nuts fell out, I removed the other one so it didn't get lost

Judging by the crimped cable ends, it's the original cable too
With the cable removed, the top guide can slide off
Now, it's time to turn her over
And remove the base plate, which is screwed on rather than the thumb latches of old, although the latch mouldings are present on the lower chassis
The very worn soleplate seal was carefully removed flr cleaning and plumping up
Out came the brushroll, which had fantastic brush strips
Some fluff under the non removable furniture guard
Now for some more electronics, which sit under this cover

This is the 2 speed switch, for changing the motor speed to a higher setting for use with tools
Tis a lovely thing
The green cover hides more wires
Also holds the ratings plate
June 1978
The rear of the 2 speed switch housing lifts off the machine with the switch and wires removed
Under the green cover sits the on/off switch, which is removed with 2 screws
The switch cover lifts off the switch
Now, we can remove the tool adapter tray with 4 screws
It was a bit grubby

This plastic flap seals the suction when the tools are not inserted, and is pushed up with the tools adapter
It has a rod and spring through the middle, this gets gummed up with fluff and jams up
Next, we can remove the rear wheels, since the adapter plate holds these down
The axle is connected to the adjustment lever with this bracket here
1 circlip needs removing, the wheel taking off and a metal bush slid off and the whole thing slides out and off the machine
The bracket is held with another circlip higher up, we'll get to that later
For now we can remove the 2 top hood screws! And reveal a lovely tidemark
We can get at the bracket now, remove this circlip
And it's free! Note the swarf coming off the screw threads too as their removed! The main thread is the metal caps on the end of each standoff, but the screws must cut a little thread as they went in in the early 1970's

The height adjustment lever slides off now
Another circlip keeps a very thin metal cable bracket in check
On the other side of the machine we have the handle recline pedal
The bracket is unscrewed, and the spring retrieved from the other side of the room
This stepped piece forms the pivoting mechanism
This being the pivot bar
Then the whole pedal assembly slides off the end, being unhooked from various pivot brackets along the way
With ALL that removed, the main bar that holds the handle fork on can be tapped out

Which brought with it the white bag latch, which should slide, but at the moment does not too well
The broken bulb was removed
Could be vintage, could be very modern, the GE logo hasn't changed!
Getting there
The main reason for popping the bulb out was to flip it back over without smashing the bulb into the carpet, and remove the front wheels
They simply slide out after removing the circlip
Back the right way up, we'd better remove the time bomb
Bracket removed, screws replaced so I know where they go when this is not refitted!
We can now remove the main wiring loom

The black wires go to the RF supressor, the yellow and white wander off to the switch and motor
It all lifts out when removed
Next, the screws holding the motor to the chassis can be removed
And the motor lifted out, revealing some hidden dirt
The compacted dust crumbled nicely, good to know this hasn't been damp
The chassis is now naked!
This metal shield plate lifts off the main motor
Revealing it to be a bog standard Senior 652 motor

The seal pulls out
Belt spindle and fan off
And the spacer washers
Carbons next, and the genuine ones have decades of life left!
The top bearing can be removed now
The cooling fan spun off the shaft
The top cover removed
The field coil is bolted down, so they were removed

And lifted out
Empty!
Armature looks in fine order
Just the bag left now, and I'm presuming this is the original fixing method, penny pinching removed the metal band and bolt and replaced it with a cable tie! Either way, snip
Probably hasn't been off in a while, or ever
Lovely
Bag fill tube next
Genuine bellows
Split

And lastly, the brushroll was stripped
The knackered bearings flung hard into the bin
A big pile of washing up was waiting for me
Which was done, and whilst it dried I cleaned the gunk off the coil with a baby wipe or 7
Cleaned the wiring up
And stripped the plug down
Then, a bowl of warm but not hot water, and some washing machine liquid was thrown together
And the bag was thrown in, swooshed about a bit then left to sit for an hour or so

Another good swoosh about produced this, which isn't terrible by any means
It bought the vinyl back though, it went rubbery again, and smelt lovely, not of dust!
I hung it up to dry, as it was lovely and warm back in August, not 8" of snow as we have had today!
Then, I made a start on the metalwork. The brushroll axle came up nicely
I buzzed the rust off the motor shield, rather than polish it up
Brushroll end caps before
Brushroll end caps, wheel axle and brushroll after. The brushroll has been stripped
And then I painted it with Euro Car Parts finest hi build primer and Poundland's finest black paint, which came out alright! I'm rubbish at painting whole machines, but getting good at brushrolls!
I also had a brainwave, and masked off the beater bars, so they stayed nice and polished

Next, I got my finest dirty rag out, and a good blob of spit and gave the plastics a good rub down...
Which made it come up rather nicely! Time for the bit I love the most, EXPLODED SHOTS!
Then, time to put the brushroll back together

Nipped up
Next, a Genuine Sebo Bag (couldn't go sending a pattern Sebo bag up to a sebo dealership now could I...) was procured from the shed of broken dreams
It's head was chopped off
And it was fitted to the bag fill tube, giving the machine an instant massive filtration upgrade!
The bag assembly can be thrown on the the 'done' pile
Motor now
Yes the bearing went through the wash, and yes it is fine with it! Just needs a little lubrication now, which it needed before tbh
The coil was bolted down
Armature dropped in
