Oreck XL Classic XL2205RH - Stripdown and Refurb!
« on: December 21, 2017, 08:27:59 pm »
I've wanted an oreck for ages! Everyone says how rubbish they are, but I've never used one. All the ones I ever see for sale are £30+, and that's too steep for a curiosity.

So, back in the summer, when I netted one for £3, and a pack of bags for £2 (which I'm sure the bloke pulled out of the machine then charged me seperatly for) I jumped at it!

ila_rendered

Was a good day that, not done anything with the other two yet, they will feature!

It ran!

But was very, very filthy!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The first thing I did was remove the outer bag, which has seen a bag leakage or 8 in it's time I think!

ila_rendered

That went into the washing machine, and I got on with the actual machine!

The bag holder unclips into 2 parts

ila_rendered

Type CC bags

The bottom part wasn't too bad

ila_rendered

Time to break the handle down now

ila_rendered

Removed the cord holder

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And split it

ila_rendered

Time to unscrew the handle

ila_rendered

Which reveals wiring

ila_rendered

Switch lifts out and unplugs

Carling makes rubbish lager but good switches it seems!

The mains cable had a bit clamped to it to stop it being pulled out, and the strain guide unclipped, and the mains cable could be removed

ila_rendered

Top cord hook clips out

ila_rendered

And we can move down a notch

ila_rendered

The main handle also forms the suction duct, and to ease unblocking, twists apart with a locking ring

ila_rendered

Which has a rubber seal under the lock part

ila_rendered

top and bottom, the top releases the bag part

ila_rendered

There is a cable clip screwed to the bag housing

ila_rendered

Surprisingly quickly, we move down to the main unit

ila_rendered

And turn it upside down

The spare belt was present and unused

ila_rendered

Undoing all the screws removes the base of the unit

ila_rendered

Which has probably seen cleaner days!

ila_rendered

2 static edge brushes unscrew from the baseplate

ila_rendered

The metal baseplate strip unscrews

And the rubber blade lifts out

ila_rendered

This metal bracket forms brushroll protection bars/baseplate bracing bars, and unclips

ila_rendered

Then all the wheels pop out with some force

ila_rendered

Brushroll next!

The old belt wasn't too bad actually, perfectly servicable

ila_rendered

The brushroll end caps pop off

ila_rendered

Seem's their keyed like Kirby ones to compensate for brushroll wear

Getting nicely packed out at the rear too...

ila_rendered

The belt spindle then unscrewed from the brushroll, which took me a few minutes to work out!

ila_rendered

The bearings and end cap holding bars pull out

ila_rendered

Nice re-greasable bearings

ila_rendered

Brushroll looked a bit sorry for itself though

ila_rendered

Onto the motor now, this cover has to be removed

Which starts to reveal the motor

ila_rendered

The suction duct starts life from this pivoting elbow

ila_rendered

These two wires are unplugged

ila_rendered

And with 2 more screws the motor lifts out

ila_rendered

More wires to remove, same clamp and locking grommit as the top handle

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Furniture guard lifts off

ila_rendered

This plastic tab is the locking mechanism to lock the machine upright

which unscrews easily

I then found this access panel for the belt on the hood

ila_rendered

So removed it

ila_rendered

Onto the motor now, it's a Johnston

This bit was wierd, the fan holds the suction duct on, so has to be undone to get it off

ila_rendered

The fan, however is spaced out/held in with this metal firewall

ila_rendered

Which comes out with a little help from Mr Tappy

ila_rendered

Fan is in good condition

ila_rendered

There's a felt washer between the pivot and motor

Carbon brushes next, and they did a Turbopower 1! The brass snapped upon removal on both flipping sides... Deal with that later

2 long bolts has the motor apart

Armature pulls out

ila_rendered

But the top bearing carrier does not easily seperate from the coil, so I left it be

ila_rendered

That's it! All apart. Everything was washed, dried, polished and ready for putting back together

ila_rendered

Firstly, the bearings got some attention. Under the black cap is a spacer washer for the balls

ila_rendered

Every man will tell you spaced out balls are a good thing! They got a good lashing of grease (insert greasy balls joke here... :underchair:)

ila_rendered

Then the motor was hammered together

ila_rendered

And the fancase end plate fitted, and bolted together

ila_rendered

My fix for the carbon brushes is the same as the fix for the Turbopower 1! Crimp the end of the carbon brush carrier to hold the spring in!

I then tried an alternate way to re-assemble the fan, which was felt washer, metal firewall, fan, washer and nut first

ila_rendered

Which didn't really work, as the metal firewall has to be tapped in quite far to space the fan out

ila_rendered

So I did it properly, as it came apart and it all fitted

ila_rendered

Time to refit it, but first, the locking tab needs refitting

ila_rendered

Spinal cable goes back through it's locking grommit

ila_rendered

Which is clipped into place

ila_rendered

The motor assembly can be dropped and guided into place now

ila_rendered

And screwed down! Bumper time

ila_rendered

Forgot the motor cover/clamp

Brushroll now, and the bearings got a lick of grease too

ila_rendered

The brushroll came up nearly like new! Still very VERY soft, but not filthy or sticky or black now!

ila_rendered

Everything pushed and screwed together

ila_rendered

And fitted to the machine, with the adjustable end caps in the 'worn' brush position, just because!

ila_rendered

Bracing bracket refitted to the base plate

ila_rendered

Wheels refitted

ila_rendered

OLD belt fitted in the spare belt slot

ila_rendered

Rubber blade and metal cover is refitted

Side brushes screwed down

ila_rendered

Then the baseplate can be fitted and close the whole thing up

ila_rendered

I then fitted the new belt (because why not, the old belt is more than fine as a spare!) the correct way

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And closed that up

ila_rendered

Done!

ila_rendered

Time to start building up the handle now, bag holder is fitted to the lower pole

ila_rendered

Cable clip fitted

ila_rendered

Then it was fitted to the machine itself

ila_rendered

Upper cord hook is put back together

ila_rendered

Mains cable strain relief is slid onto the mains cable

ila_rendered

And the top handle reassembled

ila_rendered

And screwed onto the lower handle

The cloth bag came up beautifully after the washing machine

The bag holder is clipped together

ila_rendered

The cloth bag slides on first, past some locating bumps

ila_rendered

Then the bag holder snaps ontop of that

ila_rendered

The bag bottom clips on

ila_rendered

The spring on the fancase air duct clips into the palstic bag bottom, and stops the bag blowing around

And with a new bag fitted, she is done!

Flew out the door for £60, very happy with that, would get another one with no thought at all for the right price!

Great topic.

We did a couple of those a while back and got similar money for them in auction. I was hopeful they'd fetch more actually as they aren't bad for what they are.
