There is no light on the charger when plugged in (should be lit until charge is complete).  I have tested the charger with a multimeter and it appears to be functioning.  Is there any way to test the battery before I invest in a new one? Is there likely to be any other fault I should investigate?

Thanks

There is no real way to test a battery - in the absence of having another machine handy - without trying another battery unfortunately.

No luck there - my friend has a more up to date one with a different charger and battery.  Thanks anyway.
