Is there any one out there who truly hates their Dyson?
« on: October 15, 2010, 02:23:22 pm »
I would like to know

Is there any one out there (apart from dysons competition) who truly hates their Dyson, or a particular model, and why?

I have come across a few people in South Africa that do but interestingly enough when I delve deeper and ask why it normally turns out that they bought the wrong one for there house.

I blame poor salesmen for this I always make sure the customer gets a model that will suit there needs not the one I make the most money off as this way they will tell their friends and family and I will sell more.

I was on the dyson site the other day reading thru some reviews and the most common complaint was loss of suction .

I still can't believe that people don't check there filters.

I think it has a lot to do with misconception and lack of a proper sales person than I think it has to do with bad dyson.

The DC02 is quite a cumbersome, asthmatic thing in my opinion. The DC05's banana and extending metal pole design is pants and always breaks.

Amazingly, we do get people in the shop, which says "Dyson" everywhere, and is predictably rammed full of Dysons, telling us they don't really like them and can we sell them a Vax?  ::)

 :biglaugh: Thats nothing
A customer called me about a dyson and we arranged to meet the next day. I always tell my new customers to serch dyson on the web but to also go to the official site and read up on the technology and see how they test these vacuums.

Normally the next day I am just asked to bring a new one to them without bothering about a demo.
This one lady saw the site I demo'd the machine and she asked .

"SO CAN i BUY THE PAPER BAGS FROM YOU WHEN i NEED MORE " :biglaugh:

To make it worse she is an international engineer responsible for tall sky scrapers all around the world  :(

I was trully speachless and any one who knows me knows that is truly rare

I personly don't like the dyson cyclinder models any of them.
I can't understand why any one would choose one over a dyson upright.

A lot of the customers I meet want to or have bought one ( especially people who have moved here from the UK) because "It fits in my cuboard"

I think thats crazy. Its like buying a car only because it fits in the garage

The dc22 & 23 are nice for cleaning the car though

I like my Dysons.

Asking on a Dyson forum who hates Dysons is like asking at an Aberdeen FC game who hates football.  :))

I am just interested as I have never met any one who trully hates the brand  and there must be some one out there and I would like to know why.

This is were some one will rant about a bad dyson ;D

As I said I find people buy the wrong model and hate it but as soon as you get them the right one they are over the moon.

We do alot of dyson repairs and I find it interesting how when some one brings in a  vacuum the usally call it a piece of junk and yet when people bring in a dyson No matter what the fault and how much the repair will cost they always rave about how good its been

I would not say Hate. But I dislike the actual company more than I can say right now. The Vacuum that we own and spent way to much money on, is the Dyson DC14 "Full Access" Model Vacuum. It has parts that keep breaking, which is odd when I pamper everything that I own. Parts that should have been designed for durability, and they obviously were not. But that is not the end of the world, the real problem is how their Customer Service Employees cavalierly tell you that you cannot buy the parts. Even though they make them, they have them available, but customers are not allowed to buy them. No, instead you have to send them the entire vacuum, spending a great deal of money on shipping and insurance to get the Vacuum to their facility for their people to install a 12 cent part and charge over 100 dollars to do so, then the risk of something breaking when they ship it back to you. PLUS the month or so that you will be without the vacuum is also insane. They are steadfast in their opinion that this is your only option, or to take it to a very small group of their "Certified Repair Facilities" that will do the same, they will replace the part after special ordering it and waiting one week for it, then they will replace the part, all while charging you way too much for it and their so called labor, we are talking 2 screws and about 60 seconds to do this. And they then insist that you need to replace all of your gaskets, and do a complete model overhaul. This is truly insane. Just let the customers have the part(s) they need and be done with it. There is no reason for all of this BS !! They are so full of themselves and their approach of treating my vacuum like a car that they can hold hostage at a repair facility is ludicrous at best. I can only say I hope this company fails and goes out of business sooner rather than later.

For more information about this particular broken part and the Debacle that Ensued, go read this thread on the forum:

Any service or repair in the UK they charge £73 for (about $120). This business model is why our shop exists. The parts they refuse to sell new, we sell used. We fix what needs fixing instead of charging a blanket fee to change a little part that might cost five dollars. This is why we are sending more and more stuff to the US and other parts of the world.

there seems to be a problem in the USA about getting replacement parts for your dyson if you choose to fix it our self.

The trouble is and I don't want to offend any body buy this but was explained to me by a USA lawyer who had recently moved to South Africa. He was shocked that he could buy most parts over the counter

If Dyson or any other company sells you a part and you fit it yourself and injure or kill yourself while doing so there is a good chance that dyson or any other company will get sued , He had handled a similar claim against another vacuum company.
Americans like to sue more than any were else in the world. It always amazes me when we get a USA model vacuum cleaner in for conversion to 220volt how many warning labels there are on every thing

There does. However, the listed prices I see for parts there do look quite cheap. Although that said, our stuff is very cheap when its out of stock.  :biglaugh:

I might put a page together for small parts for DC07's and DC14's that are the ones we typically send overseas with prices inc. shipping worldwide and checkout in dollars.

I am interested in what parts keep breaking> To us in the industry the dc14 represents one of the best made vacuum cleaners out there.

I had one for years and only changed it due to me hating the colour ( lavender ) and having a customer who really wanted that colour .

I have put them in Hotels here and they have lasted were as the sebo vacuum cleaners that were been used  needed repair every month. even a rep from sebo couldn't believe the houskeeper when she said that she never has any breakages from them , just a new brush roll every 6 months and these machines run hard 6 hour's a day at least.

I have gone through 3 of the bottom doors for the Collection Bin Canister, the cheap plastic hinges keep breaking, and now the Cyclone Release Catch / Latch had one of the small feet break, so that it no longer maintains spring tension and thus cannot hold the Cyclone and Collection bin on the vacuum, so it simply falls off.

As far as law suits being the excuse for Dyson not selling me the part, that is utter rubbish. Especially for a part that involves not electrical, no moving parts, and is held in with two allen screws. Everyone needs to stop thinking that people in the U.S. are vindictive freaks, when in reality it is our legal system that needs to be rewritten, so that it prevents frivolous law suits without merit. When in reality it is all the Ambulance Chasing Lawyers that are causing this, especially when they get in court and their opposing counsel is a best friend that they are going golfing with an hour later and they simply want to milk the process and they do not care who wins or loses, just that they drag it out to make maximum fees. But this discussion is neither here not there in regards to the Dyson Vacuum issues I was discussing.

All I can say is that Dyson's policies towards their customers buying parts are completely backwards and I hope that it causes enough dissent that the company eventually goes out of business. Especially when all of you gentleman keep saying how you only charge 120 dollars for a visit to your vacuum repair shop for a 12 cent part. And I can easily BUY a competing vacuum for 120 dollars, let alone pay for a repair bill. So that argument does not make any sense.  I am not saying that you do not provide a valuable service, that can be a good thing when really needed. But installing a 12 cent part, is not one of those situations. Especially when the bill would be more than buying a replacement vacuum from a competing brand.

You misread mate, I said Dyson charge that. We don't charge anything like that. I bet our pal in SA doesn't either.

We charge £35 for a service - if it needs a service. In dollars, that is $62 cheaper than Dyson UK. If it needs a twelve cent part, we might charge you £5 plus the part to fit it. Or just sell you the part.

The fellow here in South Africa is a Dyson agent, but be aware they operate differently around the world. In the UK, Dyson has 64% of the market. It is our *major* brand.

We repair hundreds of DC14's, I have *never* seen *anyone* go through three bin flaps. Either you are doing something wrong or Dyson supply an altogether different machine made from different plastics to the US. The DC14 is one of our best selling reconditioned machines -- we very seldom get one back for anything! I don't remember the last time we changed a bin flap even............

We have a Dyson shop, and we have a DC14 at home! By choice!

Does anyone know where the US market models are made?

I must say I have never replaced a bin flap door once in the 10 years I.ve been working on dysons. The laysuit problem is a true one but yes it is mainly for elecrical parts .

As a matter of interest we do allot of repairs to more cheaply made hoovers and bissels and we will hapily fit a part like that for free if you buy it from us , I don't think your problem is dyson themselves ( they do have problems and i'm not denyingthat ) but rather finding a repair shop that is not out to make a fast buck , there are many out there.
Find the good guys like us and you will get the serviec you provide.

As a matter of interest we here in Cape Town  South Africa charge R 350.00 thats 50 Dollers at the current exchange rate for a major service including a complete strip down , clean , polish out all the scratches and new filters on a dc14 that carrys a one year guarantee from our shop. We are authorised dyson agents

We will fit any small part including the
Belt
wheels
brush roll and more for free if you bring the machine in

Its called customer service and you should be able to find some one that can give you this ,

All Dysons are manufactured in maylasia out of the same plastic . the only differances in the dc14 are the motor 110volt, the brush bar bristtles ( slightly stiffer) the brush bar housing and Soal plate ( bigger opening )

I have a dc14 all access in my workshop at the moment for a 220volt conversion.

Just poped down there , no differance in the cyclone bin lid

as I.ve said I.ve never replaced one of these , my Dad uses a dc14 for his carpet cleaning business with his truck mount. it see.s alot of emptying every day is 4 years old and its never broken any thing appart from needing a new soal plate and brush bar once in a while , ah yes and the cord was replaced 2 weeks ago

Here in the states it is a whole different story. Dyson refuses to sell the end user any parts, and wants you to either send them the complete unit, or to go to one of their very few Certified Dyson Repair Centers so that they can do it for you. No matter how simple the problem is. I find this business decision to be poor at best. I am not saying that these facilities do not provide a valuable service, what I am saying is that when it is not necessary, there should be an easy and affordable alternative. Especially for something so simple as a 12 cent part that costs 10 to 20 bucks and takes a week to arrive if I order it from an overseas vendors kind enough to help.

As far as the bottom flap on the vacuum, no idea why the cheap plastic hinge pins keep breaking, but they are very brittle plastic. We do not bang the canister around, we simply open it and allow the Debris and Cat hair to fall out into the Garage Trash container. ( I also take apart the Canister and Cyclone regularly to keep it as clean as possible and working as efficiently as possible since the Cyclone Honeycomb design traps dirt and clogs easily. ) Maybe the European models are made from a more durable composite. I know here in the states that Dyson modifies the vacuums for almost every major retailer so that they each have minor differences from one another. Not just colors, but actual differences on the models. For example, the DC14's were available in about 6 or 8 variations, and each variation over here was sold at a different outlet. I still remember how my wife and I spent weeks going to different stores when we were first considering buying a Dyson, and how it appeared to be the same thing with very minor model differences or color schemes. Ended up with this very tacky Purple Version because it came bundled with several accessories that the other stores were not offering at the time.

I also take this Vacuum apart every few weeks to do maintenance and service on my own. As one of my many odd jobs in college was running my own Rainbow Vacuum Sales and a General Vacuum Repair Facility in Pennsylvania back in the early 80's. So I find working on Vacuums rather simplistic as best, as their is nothing difficult about working on them. All of them are pretty straightforward in design and the use of similar parts. Unless you are using an all metal Kirby.
