My Hoover 652 restoration
« on: March 08, 2018, 12:38:02 pm »
I got my hands on another Hoover 652 to restore, bringing the amount I own to 11. This one looked good in the pics and was still running so I bought it, The asking price was so little that it didnt bother me when I got to see it and it didnt look as good up close as it did in the pics, The mint green base's paint was servery bubbled.
I got some paint mixed to match the almost white colour and stripped down the machine to bare metal and repainted it. Some of the pics went missing but the rest are here to show you how it turned out.

Lovely restoration job you've done there. I've just acquired a 1971 Senior with a blue hood for £20, in very good condition and all original, though clogged with 47 years of dust. Now it's been cleaned, the only thing that's got damage is the plastic hood. Lots of shallow scratches, but some deeper gouges too.
What is the best way to deal with these please: use a cutting compound (T-Cut?), then polish, or fine wet and dry sand and then polish? I'm worried that once I start sanding, however fine, I will never get the gloss finish back unless I then paint it. And painting over plastic seems like over-restoring it, unless you are looking for an 'as new' result, which I'm not.
PS: interesting to see that your 652 has a white painted belt cover plate: all the UK ones I've seen are polished metal.

Both my Uk 652 have a painted belt plate too , but they are the early pink one and the grey one.

Best was is to dry sand the hood using 180 grit paper on a orbital sander, Then with 220 grit Then buff it with a buffing wheel mounted to a drill,(  make sure its not a stitched one ) while using buffing soap then buffing cream.

Wet sanding is only nessasary on freshly painted surfaces, Th idea is that the paint while dry is still soft and you can damage the paint while sanding it dry. wet sanding on aluminium or plastic is just a waste of time unless your doing a hand polish .. and who they hell has time for that.

Using the right buffing soaps and creams will render any sanding above a 220 grit useless as it will remove the scratches down to this level with ease.

Dont use Automotive domestic products either, They are very over priced, Go to a pannel shop supplier , get the proper stuff it will work better and cost a quater of the price

I did this faded hood of my commercial Hoover.

Hoover used to make all kinds of things, I recently found out that for a time they manufactured burglar alarms and wall safes

I still need to find the right colour paint to do my 652C! I went through about 4 cans from our local car shop, all dried a different colour to the lid of the tin, and at present it's too white! Keep meaning to nail it back together so I don't loose any of the bits and have another go another day, and leave it white for now. Need to wetsand the hood as well, didn't go down fine enough last time and it didn't polish out well.
