Miele Motors: Compatability?
« on: March 27, 2018, 04:07:55 pm »
Does anyone know if some of the fans on Miele cylinder motors are common please? I bought a Miele S5211 recently which was advertised as 'motor works but no suction, probably blocked or something'. As it was clogged with plaster dust but otherwise in good order, I thought it was worth a punt at £20, and the motor did indeed run.
Upon stripping it down I found that the fan had ingested something heavy enough to break it into about 20 shredded spinters, with only one tiny section still attached to the motor shaft. Amazingly, after cleaning it all up and rebuilding, I found that the motor runs fine, with only minor cosmetic damage to the fan chamber, but of course no fan equals no suction...
New motors for these are £99 upwards, and I've had no luck trying to source another non-runner with the same motor. Looking at pics online, many of the Miele motors have different serial nos. but look 100% identical. I've seen some used motors at £30ish with the wrong s/n, what are the odds that I could simply swap the fan over?
The original motor is s/n MRG 412-42/2, Miele part no. 07890580.
If anyone has a used motor or fan to sell that would do the job, please let me know: thanks.

After a lot of digging online I can answer my own question: most of the Miele fans are  the same, with the exception of the S800 and C1/C3 models. I found this out on the following German site which offers a good range of Miele spares, both new and used. Prices seem reasonable, although there is a €17 courier charge which makes it a bit uneconomic if you are after one low-value part. I've ordered a used fan from there.

Yes, I saw some on eBay, but not the model I thought I needed. Even aftermarket, they still start at about £60, and I was unsure about reliability. The original ones are like tanks-are these actually built in Germany?

Hi Macman,

I have just seen this post and have had experience with some of the Motors in the past.

Depending on wattage which I believe your S5211 is the black super air clean model 2200w.

I have made a list of models which take specific type of Miele Motor depending on the control where the rewind and on/off switch is located.

MRG 42 (Twin Fan Motor) 1500 - 1600w

S300/S371 - Air Clean Plus, Jazz Plus, Meteor G,

S500/S658 Series from 99-2004 - Cat & Dog, Big Cat & Dog, Revolution 600, Solaris, Blue Moon, Medicair.

MRG 728 - 1800w

S381, S571 Super Air Clean, S718, S812 XXL 1800w ( Any Miele model which goes to 1800w takes the MRG 728

MRG 730 - Is rated at 2000w and found in the S4 and some S700 and S800 Models which are rated at 2000w

MRG 731 - Is rated at 2100w found in S748 and S848 models.

MRG 742 - Fits all 2200w S5 models.

Some of these parts are compatible with other models for e.g Using the motor and control unit from an S848 and placing on a S500/600/700 model.
