Next, the clear plastic wire cover needs to be clipped off

ila_rendered

We can see where the really odd, very floppy red wires run

ila_rendered

They then run down the side of the assembly, through these plastic holders

ila_rendered

The plastic holders come out with the wires

ila_rendered

Out they come

ila_rendered

When one swivels the machine from side to side, the wire plug stays put, the whole bottom part rotates instead. This works with a pivot ring, and we take the bottom part off first with 2 screws

ila_rendered

The top part with the plug lifts off after this

ila_rendered

The plug can then be removed from the housing

ila_rendered

Inside this is a big nylon bush, which ensures a good seal no matter where the machine is pointing.

Ye big old internal hose pulls out now

ila_rendered

This small looking insignificant bit of plastic is the lock for the machine, when it's upright this pops out and locates with a hole on the bag housing side and stops the machine falling over

ila_rendered

Because this is a Miele and not a Vax/TTI, or Hoover/TTI to our American friends, the beefy pivoting mechanism is not made of plastic, rather actual metally metal. The fixed portion that sits on the yolk slides out of these places

ila_rendered

With both of those removed, that's the yolk done! We can now tip the motor out of its home and remove all of the seals
ila_rendered

And get cracking with the rear wheels, and yes, they were that filthy! A screw either side holds them to the lower chassis

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

They then lift out

ila_rendered

The axles themselves pull out of the end pieces, bringing the wheels with them

ila_rendered

The crud scraped off the wheels, god knows where these have been!

The rear wheels on the S7/U1 machines 'pop out' when needed, and move flush with the base when reclined. All this is done with the two end parts

ila_rendered

A small little axle connects the two parts together, and tensions the spring

ila_rendered

Then a second little metal axle holds the other side of the metal cog (the side that rotates) into it's place

ila_rendered

Rear wheels done and apart, time to service the motor (the motor from Dilys)

ila_rendered

Fancase off

ila_rendered

That's why it sounded a bit crap then!

ila_rendered

Best have that off and washed

ila_rendered

I carried on

ila_rendered

Carbons were good

Armature seemed happy

ila_rendered

Thermal cutout module came out

ila_rendered

Covered in filth, won't help it at all

ila_rendered

I also noticed the brushroll motor had a load of hair around its spindle

ila_rendered

I had to change the water on the fan

ila_rendered

Then EVERYTHING was washed, which took bloody AGES, and I had to do it in a few stages as there was too much to just pile up on my plastic sheet on the landing ready for the airing cupboard! Then it all dried, it was all polished, and the red parts machined and laid out for a MEGA exploded diagram

ila_rendered

Then it's time to put it back together, starting with the thermal cutout for the motor

ila_rendered

Which just clips back together

ila_rendered

I gave the bearings a lick of grease whilst I had them in my hand

ila_rendered

Which might shut them up

Much better

ila_rendered

Did the other one too, and the armature is serviced

ila_rendered

And can be dropped back into the motor

ila_rendered

Carbons can go back in

ila_rendered

Thermal cutout is refitted

ila_rendered

Cover refitted

ila_rendered

Clean fan!

ila_rendered

Fitted fan

ila_rendered

Fan covered up, and the rear rubber mounts fitted

ila_rendered

And now all these need to go back together!

ila_rendered

The half cog and it's axle go in first

ila_rendered

Then the spring and it's retaining pin

ila_rendered

The main axle is backed out just enough to put the other side on, then it's pushed back through

ila_rendered

Making sure the axle passes through the loop of the spring

ila_rendered

Clean Wheels!

ila_rendered

Not going to lie, this took a few attempts, and studying of the dis-assembly pictures

ila_rendered

Eventually both sides were done!

ila_rendered

(Image 200, over halfway there now!)

We can now take the spotless lower chassis

ila_rendered

The rear wheels can be fitted now, ensuring (at this stage) that you can pull them back/out with your hands, and that they spring back into the 'reclined' position

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Motorey goodness now

ila_rendered

Fancase seal can be fitted

ila_rendered

And the wiring can be plugged in, and the motor dropped in, and the housing seal fitted

ila_rendered

Yolk time!

ila_rendered

Slide the metal cog bits in

ila_rendered

The locking peg can go back in

ila_rendered

Internal hose back in

ila_rendered

Plastic seal/locating ring back in

ila_rendered

The wiring can start to go in now, pop the plug onto it's side of the retaining/rotating ring

I popped a smear of grease around the pivoting ring to smooth it up a bit

ila_rendered

And fitted the two parts

ila_rendered

The wiring now needs to pass through the hole behind the plug, the cabletie clip fitted and the loop observed, otherwise nothing else will line up further down the line

ila_rendered

Put the red wires back in their holders, and fit the holders

ila_rendered

And refit the now see-through plastic cover

The metal bushes and plastic spacer can go onto the yolk now

ila_rendered

Top motor housing wise, the sound deadening goes in

ila_rendered

Then the microswitch

ila_rendered

Which I fitted incorrectly, so the below picture is wrong, but included for completeness and to prove that I really am a muppet...

ila_rendered

Release pedal

ila_rendered

Fitted for releasing goodness

ila_rendered

Time to run wires now

ila_rendered

Re-fit the wires to the corner piece

ila_rendered

Like so. The un-used yellow connector is for the LED strip on the less cheap models, and is very easy to retrofit, I sent these pictures to an american collector who did the upgrade and said it was VERY easy! I'll try and point the bits out as we go...

The observant amongst us may have noticed the motor is now sitting in the opposite part to where I showed it earlier... that's because it needs to!

ila_rendered

The last red wire holder goes on now, this is the part that I had issues with RIGHT at the beginning on the old head!

ila_rendered

It sits down like this, and the plugs connect

ila_rendered

Making sure the yolk is in the reclined position to keep the wheels set correctly

ila_rendered

Lob a nugget of grease on each side of the metal cogs

ila_rendered

Then fit the top cover to the motor housing

ila_rendered

Fit the trim piece. This is what you replace with the LED assembly, it's wires run off through that little hole at the top I think

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Bottom covers now

The inner, moving part slots in to the outer part this way round

ila_rendered

Then, and this part is tricky, pull out the moving part so it hooks over the base of the chassis as shown, then screw up the top part. Now, when you recline and stand the machine up the moving part will 'stay put' and slide behind the fixed part. This took a go or two as well...

ila_rendered

Post filter cover now!

ila_rendered

All nicely washed, the diffuser lays over the outer silver part

ila_rendered

And Click, it's done!

ila_rendered

The cover sits in it's slots

ila_rendered

And is fixed down by screwing the polished hood on!

ila_rendered

The top red cover screws on now, and this picture highlights the issues I had with alignment, everything really has to be spot on accurate for it to clip together. I had to adjust the lower piece and the top bit together to sort that out

ila_rendered

BRUSHROLL! Gosh my fingers hurt...

The end caps had their springs fitted

ila_rendered

And in one smooth, fluid motion fit the end caps to the brushroll, then fit the belt and belt guard and drop the whole lot in!

ila_rendered

Pop the motor in, and fit the belt and clip down the belt cover (which I really didn't wash very well looking at this picture. Tut tut, I should fire myself!)

ila_rendered

Baseplate!

ila_rendered

This sort of pushes together, minding to keep the bent out bits of metal from catching

Then a hammer gets the folded over bits bent nicely back down

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Wheel axles in

ila_rendered

Wheels fitted, with drops of grease where appropriate

The baseplate can be fitted now

ila_rendered

And this part is done!

ila_rendered

Moving on up (moving on down, time to break free...)

ila_rendered

We can put the lower plug into the bag housing

ila_rendered

Then run the wires through the holder, then fit the holder to the machine, which was more annoying than I thought, as it has to be precisely in the right place, and drops in and doesn't fall out again!

ila_rendered

Pre motor filter cage can go in

ila_rendered

The hose end pivot got a squirt of lithium grease, and reassembled

ila_rendered

And fitted. The spring sits in a groove in the chassis, which tensions it as it's pulled out so it returns (although even after all this it wasn't the best action it could have been)

ila_rendered

The main suction cover goes on now, and clamps the hose pivot down

Over to the back now

ila_rendered

wand receptacle in

ila_rendered

Bag door seal fitted

Blockage inspection cover fitted

ila_rendered

Pre motor filter fitted

ila_rendered

Bag holder fitted
ila_rendered

Then, the bag housing can be fitted back to the motor unit

ila_rendered

PCB can go back together

Handle socket fitted, and the cover closed on the handle receptacle

That can be screwed down now

ila_rendered

Then the PCB placed daintily on top

ila_rendered

The fabulous Dame Dilys sent me a brand new genuine bag, appalled that I was just going to lob a pattern bag in, so that got fitted with pride!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The bag door can go on now, along with its hinges! One locating tab on mine is broken sadly, but it still works, it just needs a bit of help to move straight

Now we jump to me opening another handle... Which through sheer blind luck was listed on ebay for £15 not long after I broke the original one!

ila_rendered

AND WE ARE DONE!!!!  ;) ;)

Some wax went on

ila_rendered

Which made it look alot better
