Miele S7260 Cat & Dog - Repair and Refurbishment!

A fair while ago now, I became the proud* owner of a Miele S7!

And yes, it was leant up against the bin for a reason...

It didn't sound too bad...

I had a quick look to see if the motor could be coaxed back into life

Undo these screws here

ila_rendered

Which splits the 2 halves (yes I was working in the rain)

ila_rendered

Undo some more screws to uncover almost the motor

ila_rendered

Trim piece off

ila_rendered

Post motor filter out

ila_rendered

Baseplate off

ila_rendered

Which releases the motor housing itself

ila_rendered

Stupid cover bit fell off

Now we can see the motor

ila_rendered

And extract it

ila_rendered

Brought it inside for a look

ila_rendered

And had it apart

ila_rendered

Yea that's  :dead-dyson:

But, I had another motor from a scrapped S5 in the shed that ran fine, and they look the same, don't they! So in that came

ila_rendered

And I extracted its guts

ila_rendered

Which looked a bit better than the other one

ila_rendered

As did the carbon brushes

ila_rendered

So, for good measure, I gave the bearings a little grease

And went to fit the carbons.... THEN found out the motor was a different flipping size! Yes, the armature is identical, but the casing as a whole is bigger on the cylinder models... so the carbon brushes would not fit... Sod it, in went the old brushes

ila_rendered

And back together it went

ila_rendered

All the internal wiring fell out at this point (will expand on that later) so I tucked it all back in

ila_rendered

Lobbed the motor back in

ila_rendered

And.... it sounded ruddy awful still, as you can tell from the above video, which is a combination of all of the above!

I even changed the bearings for new ones just incase

ila_rendered

But to no avail. So into the shed it got thrown! Until Dame Dilys from Autovac saved the day!

With a scrapper machine!

Which has an identical head and a random cream body

ila_rendered

The head had been pillaged for parts, but TBH since I only wanted it for the motor I wasn't fussed

ila_rendered

Both brushrolls were equally worn

Different belts though, although they were the same size

ila_rendered

Comparing the two heads, the one Dilys sent was in FAR better condition.... So I swapped the baseplate over, and connected it all up

Another collector (HooverMaster) sent me a random box of bits, and lobbed in a lovely condition dusting brush and upholstry tool, which was handy as the upholstry tool with the machine was some random thing

ila_rendered

A better dusting brush

ila_rendered

And from Dilys's box I got a non broken wand

ila_rendered

And a much better crevice tool

So all that got sorted out

And...

I had a complete, actually working (bar a dirty fan) S7!

Which was fantastic! It hung around for a while, until finally, it's day came! (here we go  8))

Small tools off

ila_rendered

Small tools split

ila_rendered

Cable off

ila_rendered

Hose and wand off

ila_rendered

Hose off the wand

ila_rendered

This next bit took about 20 minutes, and a conversation with Dorian from HooverLux to figure out. There is a hole here

ila_rendered

One needs to push a screwdriver REALLY HARD into this hole

ila_rendered

And whilst pulling on the wand and pushing inside this hole, the handle eventually comes out

This next bit didn't go too well, so I'll tell you when to stop...

The top trim part of the handle pops off to reveal the switches

ila_rendered

The switches are in 2 parts, the cover and the teeny tiny switches

ila_rendered

With some careful carefulness, the switches AND covers pop out from the main bit of trim

ila_rendered

I hate these plastics Miele use. The switch bank on the S5 cylinders are made of it, and the paint always flakes/wears off and makes them look shite. This is no exception

ila_rendered

Under the trim sits a TINY little screw (my smallest barely fitted it)

ila_rendered

Which once removed gives access to some of the wires

ila_rendered

This next part basically wrote the handle off, and I had to buy another one... These are not meant to come apart  :'(

The bottom plastic part, that locks the handle to the machine took a fair bit of persuasion to get out

ila_rendered

I then tried to get the top handle off, but again, something big is holding it in, and all I managed to do was damage it. I then tried to put the plastic bit we have just removed back in, but failed, it's too thin to put any welly behind to push it up, so basically, if your handle breaks, it's scrap.

Annoyed, I moved on and had the bag door off. The bottom corner edges pop out slightly and the whole thing lifts off

The pivoting hinges pop out

ila_rendered

The full bag can be removed and binned

ila_rendered

Then 2 screws and the control panel cover lifts off

ila_rendered

The speed control knob is fitted to the cover

ila_rendered

It pops out

ila_rendered

Some damage here, although when it's screwed down it closes itself up so isnt a massive issue

ila_rendered

A PCB

ila_rendered

Which lifts out

ila_rendered

One handy connector separates the PCB from the wiring that wanders off to the motor

Now we see 4 screws

ila_rendered

These 4 screws hold the handle socket in place

ila_rendered

Once removed, it opens up to allow access to the handle plug socket

ila_rendered

The PCB can now be called fully removed

ila_rendered

This flap is actually part of the wand assembly, it gets pushed in when the handle is inserted. What it actually does I'm not too sure, it didn't seem connected to anything. It also proved impossible to remove, so I left it on

ila_rendered

This part did not want to let go

ila_rendered

Back to the PCB quickly, the LED cage pops off

ila_rendered

And the lenses lift off the cage

ila_rendered

PCB closeup

Empty

ila_rendered

Next stage involves us moving down, to seperate the bag housing from the base

Simply remove all of the screws you see here, and the bag housing lifts off

ila_rendered

The connecting piece that holds everything together when screwed in pulls off. The bag door seal has also fallen off at this stage.

ila_rendered

The bag door seal base sits behind the connecting piece

ila_rendered

Inside the bag housing, we can remove the bag holder

ila_rendered

The pivot points pop out, releasing the bag housing, but one screw also holds the pivot point down

ila_rendered

Pre motor filter removed

ila_rendered

Then we can open the curious cover at the rear!

The cover hides a blockage inspection port

ila_rendered

Finding and popping some clips, the suction path can start to be uncovered

ila_rendered

Removing this cover also removes the hose inlet, which is sprung so it returns to an upright position when the hose is not under tension (well it should, mine didn't...)

ila_rendered

I removed the outer retaining ring

ila_rendered

Then the spring and inner ring

The pre filter cage pops out

ila_rendered

Next, we remove the cover, which took a surprising amount of effort and uncover the plug that connects to the bottom part

ila_rendered

Some more screws and the first part of the bag housing suction channel can be removed, the bit from the hose to the floorhead suction channel

ila_rendered

This is the part that the wand sits in, the other side of the bag housing

ila_rendered

The bag housing is EMPTY!

ila_rendered

The spinal cord can be removed from its holder

ila_rendered

My parts box is flipping full already, and we have the most tricky bit to come!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Baseplate off

ila_rendered

There is a spring that sits over the belt guard

The metal portion of the baseplate does come off the plastic part, with careful bending of metal

The metal part was holding so much fluff

ila_rendered

The rubber strip can be removed now

The swivel wheels pop off

And the metal axles pull out of the baseplate structure

ila_rendered

Brushroll now

ila_rendered

The brushroll motor is clamped down with this little bracket

ila_rendered

And once removed, it and the brushroll come out as one drunken lump

ila_rendered

The motor can be unplugged, although the pink wire holds a thermal cutout, which is secured under this white plastic wedge

ila_rendered

A rubber mount sits around the top of the brushroll motor

ila_rendered

Brushroll now! One end cap will come off fine

ila_rendered

The springs have seen some action

The other side pulls off as well, but the belt housing will need to be opened as it clamps over part of the end cap. It will have an equally filthy spring

Pick them clean

ila_rendered

Then unclip and remove the belt cover

Done! Another wedge that sits under the motor is found

ila_rendered

Time to move up to the top now. The top 2 screws hold the red cover plate on, once removed the plate lifts off

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

To remove the hood, open the post motor filter flap and remove the 2 screws

ila_rendered

And lift the hood off

ila_rendered

The post filter flap is held on only by the hood, so this can be brushed off now

Even the flipping filter flap comes apart into a million pieces! It holds the diffuser pad

ila_rendered

So far to go!  :snivel:

ila_rendered

Those 4 top screws... Remove the bottom 2 and the lower cover plate falls off

ila_rendered

The cover plate holds another cover plate, that sits against a clip on the main machine and opens and closes (well, it should, it binds up in reality) when the vac is upright and reclined

ila_rendered

Remove the screws visible underneath that hold the cover on, not that hold the wheels on (oh god, the wheels... I need another drink)

ila_rendered

This lets us see the motor again, except this is a different and working motor! Huzzah

ila_rendered

The HORRIBLE red cables connect to the motor wiring block, and can be unplugged

ila_rendered

Next, you will be foiled by the brushroll microswitch, that turns the brushroll on and off with the reclination of the machine (is that even a word?)

ila_rendered

Unplug the wires

The wires run through this little angle piece, pull them all out, we can worry about that later

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Next, lift the yolk assembly clean off the bottom part

ila_rendered

To remove the recline pedal, this plastic bush needs to be prised out

ila_rendered

Once out, the pedal pretty much removes itself thanks to the spring

ila_rendered

The microswitch can be removed now

ila_rendered

There's some good old fashioned Miele sound deadening inside this part

ila_rendered

Now we can work on the Yolk

ila_rendered

Each pivot point has a metal bush, and the suction side has a plastic 'joiner' piece
