DC25 1ohm resistor blowing
« on: April 08, 2018, 09:51:33 pm »
Hi, My faithful DC 25 caught a nylon electric blanket tie in it's brush roller. I was a bit slow to see it, but eventually I powered the cleaner off. Normally if I clear the obstruction it will just carry on. Not this time. After checking all the switches etc, and confirming power is getting to the brush roller, I investigated the brush roller motor PCB. The 1 ohm resistor on the output of the bridge rectifier was open circuit. I ordered a replacement piece (1 ohm 4 watt) from Farnell. When I switched on, there was a popping noise, and the resistor was open circuit again. It would be fairly easy to replace all the components on the PCB, but I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem? Could it be the motor? Is there an easy way to check it? Thanks.

A new PCB is £14.99, could you replace all the components for less than that?

Motor sounds like it is damaged to me.

If it has never been replaced then it may have been getting close to the end of it's life anyway.

By the time you have replaced the motor, the 1 ohm resistor it would be more viable to replace the whole head unit for a new one if it is pretty beat up inc beater bar

Thanks for the advice. I considered replacing all the components on the PCB and trying again - it would only cost a couple of quid. However, if the motor is indeed faulty, that would be a a waste of time. I decided to order a new brush bar assembly, which has just arrived. Problem solved! It's like a new machine  ;)
Thanks again, David
