Re: Dyson V6 Absolute direct drive head voltage required?

Hello all.

What voltage should a direct drive head from a V6 Absolute be receiving?

I've made a frankenvacuum out of an old Makita 18V LTX vacuum, a cyclonic filter and a Dyson motorised head.
While it works brilliantly I am concerned that I am overdriving the Dyson motorised head.
In preliminary testing at 18V this vacuum extracted far more dust from a test patch of carpet than the original V6 Absolute.

Running a multimeter over the prongs on the wand of a V6 model gave me 0 Volts, presumably as the circuit board wont supply a voltage with no attachment.

I can confirm that the head runs very very fast at 18V. I am considering fitting a step down converter to drop the voltage down to 12V for longevity.  Thanks!

i thought the v6 was 18v, if so and you want to drop it to 12v you could add a resistor in series (as you probably know )

You can use ohms law to calculate, but a quick method ... Vdrop req divided by I (current) required = R
then work out the power rating, v x I =Pw... but a hidden red herring is not to work out the power rating after the volt drop, but the supply voltage to be safe
readings will vary as the head motor becomes under load with carpet resistance.
eg 6v drop at 1 amp = 6 ohms ? P=18w

I am a little rusty with formulae so i will apologise now for any errors
I am building a fishing rod ring wrapper ( i do have a commercial one too ) i used a sewing machine motor but even with a variable rheostat i couldn't get motor speed down low enough ( my fault for getting the gearbox calcs wrong ) so i split the motor open and revealed a couple of 1 ohm resistors in series with the brushes, i increased these to 10 ohms 1 watt and got the min motor speed perfect.

Another point i noticed, run a v6 on the bench, whilst on remove the head - the cyclone motor still runs - then reattach the head. head wont run until switched off and back on.

The V6 uses a 21.6V battery, I believe that is the voltage supplied to the vacuum motor only in Max mode.
I would guess that the voltage supplied to the motorised head would be considerably less given that it runs at a constant steady speed regardless of the mode chosen.

I could drop the voltage to say 12V or 9V... or 5V
But I don't really know what I'm shooting for as I only had access to a test unit for a few minutes.

If someone with a unit in front of them would be good enough to run a multimeter over a connected motorised head, I'd be most grateful.

Sorry for delay, phone never stopped yesterday.

label on the head quotes 16.2v @ 20w (1.234a)

stripped mine, 16v on motor  1.15a.
My v6 is the older type head however, just noticed the pics of yours

The max switch on main unit makes no difference to head supply either, always 16v.
Correct, the main unit doesn't supply a voltage without the head attached.
This is either current detecting circuitry, or a type of open collector circuitry where the head motor is the load in a drive circuit.

ryevac, thank you sir. I wouldn't have thought to look at the base for a label!
I can confirm (with a magnifying glass) on the base of my head it is says 16.2V @ 35W. That's just over 2 amps in my case.

Thanks again, it means I only need to drop the supply a couple of volts.
