This very odd vacuum cleaner was given to me by my good friend Steve Cook, as he couldn't be bothered to go to the tip...

Electrolux Z1910 Self Propelled - Stripdown and Refurbishment!

It is a basic bagless Electrolux, but with a big difference, which we shall come to later, the main issue as you can see is the lack of a bin! So in the shed it languished for utterly ages!, until a viewer of my channel who handily lived 4 miles away from my work offered me a burnt out normal model, with a bin! A short time later, this happened...

It then languished a bit more, until it's time came to enter the operating theatre

The post motor filter sits behind this afterthought looking cover

Although it's very clean, which is nice

Must have been changed as the machine itself is quite dirty. The bagless system this runs is utterly HOPELESS!

Off comes the cable

And off comes the hose and hose ends

I unbolted the handle at this juncture

Which didnt really do alot bar expose this thick cable

Time to investigate where this cable goes, and we start with the handle grip, which also contains the self drive controls

2 screws made themselves known underneath, so let's remove those

This red part fell out when the bottom was removed, which is the little red nub you see poking out of the handle that does the controlling

Lifting the top reveals this spring thing, which I worked out returns the handle to it's neutral position, the red part clips into the handle top

Clamped to the inner metal handle is the other end of the cable, which turned out to be a bowden cable that runs the whole length of the machine!

With the clamp released, the handle comes off the machine now!

We move down now. The silver top of the machine is actually a big clip on cover

The tool holder can be removed now

Look, a date! 1997

With that removed, the big suction inlet to the bin can be removed, this forms the cyclone top and look at the efficiency of that! Shark would be proud...

The business end of the contraption has a massive rubber sheet stuck to it, which acts as the seal for the bin

With that bit removed, the lower part of the metal handle falls out, being held in by the just removed part

The bowden cable loops out and back in to this part of the handle

I then discovered why the self drive mechanism never worked very well....

We'll worry about that later

Because on the other side of the top to the tool holder is the MASSIVE switch assembly, with one screw just begging to be removed

Here we see the mains cable and internal cable together in sweet harmony around a broken screw standoff...

Simple affair with a switched live here

The switch just pops out, revealing the tantalising cutout for variable power, probably fitted to the TOL American Eureka version that used the same chassis

With all that rubbish out of the way, the 2 cables simply fall out of their places to go

And we can flip it round and have a look at it's undercrackers

Then swiftly flip it back over as on these models the hood screws on from the top

Like so

handy belt change instructions printed here

Some bum fluff build up was noticed

The only thing to need to be removed from the hood is the belt guard

The brushroll just lifts out

and comes apart nicely. Even the bearings could be replaced easily, although in this care that is not needed as their lovely!

Under this cover, the magic lays

A thumping huge motor!

and the other end of the bowden cable

I unclipped that

Then started finding wires. These went to a switch. Not a brushroll switch, but the switch to turn the self drive motor off

Turns out they were also the main feed to the motor itself so 2 clamps later and the whole thing split apart nicely!

Now I can get to the screw holding the switch in place

and remove it

Next, the 2 screws as indicated hold the drive motor in place

The motor and the utterly compacted pile of fluff kicked up by the driven wheel (yes, thats right, the ONE driven wheel) over the years! It was quite impressive actually

This bit of foam covers up the area around the lever the bowden cable moves, it's doing a sterling job of keeping all the fluff out...

more screws later and the wheel assembly itself can be removed

And we can see how the whole thing works

What happens is, the machine can be propelled forwards and backwards, the handle pulls or pushes the bowden cable, which in turn pushes the lever on the motor left or right. The whole back end of the motor moves with the lever, and contacts either the left or right side of this contraption of gears and bearings! one side makes it go forwards, the other side back! The whole ling lifts out of the shell

And starting from one side, the first set of shims and the most dinky shallow bearing I have ever seen come off

Then, a circlip, washer and locating block come off

The next hurdle was this metal pin, which was knocked out

And the next stage can come out

In the middle sits this bracket

and the other side is an exact mirror, which once part looks like this

Behind each of the metal bits that hold the locating pin, sits the plastic cog, which has a layer of cork type material on the back of it. When the lever is pushed to the side, it pushes this drive cog against the metal part, causing the drive to be transferred to that side. Neutral is in the middle not touching either side! very clever

But then it gets even more old school, the levering motion is controlled by this cage here, the bowden cable connects to it

And depending on its pivot it actually pushes the whole appropriate side of the cog assembly against the drive wheel from the motor itself. It's lovely to see such actual engineering on a vacuum!

The drive motor is screwed onto the cage holding part

Which reveals that the drive passes through an adapter shank from the back of the motor, it's no wonder this thing weighs a frigging ton!

Said adapter shank is held in with a circlip

And the whole thing nicely comes apart

I inquisitively popped the cover off the back of the motor, and made a note to fill it with grease later

Onto more mundane affairs, the spring that sorts the height adjuster out!

Once removed the wheels pull all the way vertical then pull out

And then delightfully strip down even more!

I pulled my knob out

And moved on to the release pedal, 2 dodgy looking tabs here

Which came out without drama

Furniture guard removed

With all that done, we can remove the motor cover and oh my gosh

First out is the utterly knackered pre motor filter and the metal shelf that holds them in

The motor itself seems to be inside a nice case

The suction inlet pops off

oooh 1998 this time

It too has a more complicated than it needs to be seal assembly

We can get the bowden cable out now, which is indeed quite broken

Put that to one side for now

This pathetic excuse for something I think packs the void between the bowden cable and chassis out, as the outside of the bowden cable cant move so the inner wire does, hence why its no good with a sodding big broken bit

We can lift the motor out of its dusty hole now

There's lots of stuff wrapped up in this foam

Unwrapping it took ages

And this is what lurks beneath

The wires look easy to remove, so lets get those out

then see how this plastic shell comes off

The white rubber grommit comes out

As does this random plastic tube which goes nowhere and controls nothing

Then 2 long screws come out

and the cover lifts off

another foam seal

Even the 2 terminals have little foam seals!

foam seals with plastic housings! This is very bizarre and overkill!

A more normal looking fancase seal comes off

Naturally, the super efficient filtration had filled the fan up with crap, so off came the fancase

and off came the fan

Next we needed to unscrew and remove the top housing. gently, gently...

Still, the wobble washer came out nicely

Coil lifted out

MMMM crusty

Next, I gently tapped the top of the armature to pop it out of the fancase rear. Which went well until this happened...

Rusted on so badly that this part snapped, and I buggared the threads up on the armature as I forgot to fit the nut before hitting it... Grrrrrrr, moving on swiftly

This hose needs to come off, surely I cant break this bit?

Ah no its alright, it comes off nicely!

Onto the bin now!

It has a filter on it, so we remove that

The handle/securing clip unscrews

then 2 screws on the back release the :biglaugh:cyclone

The dirt that didn't come out despite a good bashing over the bin can be seen here

And that's that stripped. It all got washed and forgotten about in the airing cupboard for a week, whilst I sorted the motor. I did have a spare motor, sort of... From the machine that donated the bin
