Electrolux Glider Z1280 - Stripdown and Refurbishment!
« on: November 19, 2018, 10:21:53 pm »
Earlier in the year, A fellow collector called Phillip drew my eye to a vac quite close to me, which he rather fancied. So I tottered off one lunchtime to darkest outer London and picked up this

ila_rendered

A £5 Electrolux Glider with its hose! I've never really been a fan of the Glider it has to be said. In terms of where it sits in the range, it was the budget cleaner to the Contour that ran alongside it. The Glider replaced the Twin Turbo that had been going since the 500 days (you can see a 506 here - https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,1737.0.html), and the Contour replaced the 600 series (you can see a 612 here - https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,3087.0.html)

This catalogue scan borrowed from Mr Chris Parker shows the hierarchy in 1992, the Twin Turbo being the budget cleaner, and the super dooper Contour being the top of the range model

ila_rendered

This example dates from 1995, so towards the end of it's life, as the contour got bumped down to the mid-low end cleaner when the Airstream (which in itself is just a facelifted Contour) got released. It is also flipping filthy, having been neglected for the last decade or so!

ila_rendered

I must confess I've only ever used a Glider once, in the mid 1990's at my mums friends when they would have been new!

And I am very surprised at how nice it is! But, it works terribly, so you know what that means...

ila_rendered

A better ratings plate shot

ila_rendered

Here is its hose, which was quite nice for it to have actually

ila_rendered

It plugs into the cleaner and works in the same way as the 500 series did, bar a different connector. The machine end comes off easily

ila_rendered

And has a little rubber seal concealed within

ila_rendered

The main rubber seal pulls off too

I took the bag door off and removed the filters to wash them

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Took the bag off and removed the slide to keep

ila_rendered

There's a few things on the bag door itself that needs to come off

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The door latch

ila_rendered

Which flicks out

ila_rendered

The bag door seal itself

ila_rendered

And the bag full indicator

Which is quite filthy after 23 years of use

ila_rendered

The end comes off, and the spring comes out

ila_rendered

As do the coloured pegs

ila_rendered

We move on up to the handle now

ila_rendered

And after dropping the cable we can get at the screw holding the handle on

ila_rendered

Which is removed in the way that only a long screw can be

ila_rendered

Handle off!

ila_rendered

Electrolux were still British at this point, before they faded away to just being a name on American rubbish, then vanishing from floorcare forever

ila_rendered

Behind the handle, we see two more screws

And the whole rear of the vacuum hinges off!

ila_rendered

I found a 1994 date wheel! I would have been 7 years old when this was stamped out

ila_rendered

The mains cable is clamped on with this HUGE block of plastic!

ila_rendered

The wires connecting to the wiring block like so

ila_rendered

The cable winds its way through like so

ila_rendered

Leaving 4 more wires! Simple little thing this!

ila_rendered

Up top behind the false shell are 2 more screws

ila_rendered

Which release the switch housing

ila_rendered

The latch for the bag door slides out of the bottom of this part

The switch bit itself just pops right out

ila_rendered

1991 this part!

ila_rendered

With the motor wires removed and the supressor slung in the bin the choc block can be removed now

ila_rendered

We can turn it over and have a look underneath

ila_rendered

Which is showing some historical damp issues

ila_rendered

Up with the base plate

ila_rendered

Luckily, the brushroll was in FAB condition, which is good as brushrolls for these are pretty unobtanium!

ila_rendered

End caps off

ila_rendered

The centre wheels are next

Under the centre wheels are some screws

ila_rendered

These, along with 2 others made the whole thing fall apart!

ila_rendered

This rod is the release mechanism, pushing on the pedal twists the bar and unlocks the key to reclination

ila_rendered

The pedal itself just lifts out

ila_rendered

This seal goes around the suction channel

ila_rendered

The height knob lifts out

ila_rendered

As does the little piece that gives the knob some notchiness

ila_rendered

This little chap holds the machine upright, and is what the metal rod pushes against to make the machine recline

I removed the wheel caps now, and saw those bloody horrible metal spring clips, so left the wheels on...

ila_rendered

A nice little pillow had made itself under the belt guard

ila_rendered

We move onto the motor now!

ila_rendered

And crack the case

ila_rendered

The motor lifts straight out

ila_rendered

Belt end rubbers off

ila_rendered

Fancase rubbers off, revealing that this is a Twin Turbo motor itself! Ultimate cost scrimping by Lux here! The brushroll is shared across the 600 to the airstream, motor is from the 1980's!

ila_rendered

The motor to bag housing suction channel lifts out

ila_rendered

Then the hose from the brushroll housing to the main suction channel lifts out

The hose winds through the plastic housing but all comes apart in the end!

ila_rendered

And everything is apart! Quite simple really!

ila_rendered

Once washed and dried, it was time for a polish

ila_rendered

Which bought the plastics up phenomonly well

ila_rendered

We are now ready for re-assembly!

ila_rendered

The internal hose gets assembled first

ila_rendered

Plastic insert needed a drop of oil to happily go back in now its all so clean and grippy

ila_rendered

But before long

ila_rendered

I noticed the lack of any seal on the mating surfaces of these two parts, so I cracked the bathroom sealant out

And once slid into here

ila_rendered

and tidied up a bit is now perfectly sealed!

ila_rendered

The motor was not bad at all, and rand really well, but sounded a touch dry, so the bearings got a good soak in oil which is certainly all you can do with the fancase one as Lux riveted the UK motors together! (Our own Vacuum Cleaner House showed a very envious picture of a fully stripped motor as foreign markets got a nice nut and bolt affair like normal motors!)

ila_rendered

It was rubbered up and re-fitted

ila_rendered

I splashed the mastic about a bit more

ila_rendered

and fitted the main suction channel

ila_rendered

The now mirror shiney cover can go back on

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Down to the brushroll housing now, which came up very well considering it was well worn with grit

Belt guard and metal thing fitted

ila_rendered

Pivot latch screwed in

ila_rendered

Height control dimple fitted

ila_rendered

Height knob dropped in

ila_rendered

The underside of the hood is looking much nicer now

ila_rendered

Suction seal fitted

ila_rendered

The recline pedal is utterly spotless, which is very surprising!

ila_rendered

Recline pedal mechanism fitted

ila_rendered

To fit the 2 parts together, I laid the brushroll housing down first, and fitted the internal hose bit

But every time I flipped the hood to lower it on the recline pedal rod fell out, so I fitted it to the brushroll housing instead

ila_rendered

And with a massive fiddle to keep everything in place, screwed the two halves together

ila_rendered

It's a shame I couldn't  split this apart to de-rust the centre axle but if I broke it I'd have to find another one which would cost more than the machine itself! A few drops of oil went in to help it run smoothly

ila_rendered

However luckily the bit you see isnt rusty! Yey

ila_rendered

I had a rootle through the shed and found a genuine belt

ila_rendered

Which was a tad better than the one it had!

ila_rendered

Except it wasnt, as during testing it was too tight, and started to burn up... Turns out the Ultima Glider is a completely different machine! I lobbed a good old Dyson non clutched belt on which always fits everything! It's also a MASSIVE pain to get the belt on one of these, no room at all!

ila_rendered

The brushroll was a tad dirty, which shows now it's been washed!

ila_rendered

Many drops of oil went on the brushroll bearings, as you cant replace those either, and in it went

The baseplate went back on, and I moved the missing screw to where it is because that part clips behind the brushroll housing, so is helped along a bit

ila_rendered

The shine is strong with this one!

ila_rendered

Time for wiring now

ila_rendered

Switch housing ready to have its hole filled

ila_rendered

Like so

ila_rendered

Bag door latch fitted

ila_rendered

Wires run

ila_rendered

And run some more

ila_rendered

Mains cable now, and I fitted it an inch away from where it was to minimise any internal breakages/stress/it got rid of the massive permanent bend where it comes out of the thing after 23 years of use!

All fitted!

ila_rendered

And hidden forever

ila_rendered

Handle now

ila_rendered

And the cord wound out out of the sodding way!

ila_rendered

Wheel caps on

ila_rendered

The filters came up very well with a wash

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And I found some bags! The new owner had excitedly obtained a genuine set of filters and a genuine pack of bags, so it was agreed that I would use the old stuff and lob a new random bag in for the after video, which saved me some money!

And plugged in to test for air tightness

ila_rendered

And we are done! 4 coats of wax later, does it work any better?

YES! (with some tape to make up for the missing cap which the new owner also found). Does it look any better?

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Yes it does! It was MINT underneath all the filth, not a flipping mark on it! And was one of those satisfying refurbs that came up like brand new in both looks and performance, with the only new parts being a belt and bag!

And it changed my mind completely, I loved it! Prefer the gliders to contours now, mainly because their a bit taller, and work so much better on the carpet than a contour! Will deffo keep an eye out for another one if it comes up at the right place for the right price!
