AM03 Pedestal Fan -- seeking motor

I have acquired a second hand AM03 Pedestal fan, with the intent of using it on low speed so that documents are not blown all around the room and magazine pages blown closed, etc.

When I saw it demonstrated at the seller's house it worked fine. When I got it home and powered it up I was annoyed to hear a whining sound from the motor that approximates worn bearings. Worse at low speed than high, it's especially bad when the fan is powered off -- the motor then grinds down noisily to a halt.

So, I pulled the fan apart to be greeted by a Johnson E9IHM-240 stepper motor. Although it feels OK when rotated by hand, I suspect the bearing at one end is shot.



Now, my problem is to find a replacement motor. Given that it's a Johnson -- a long-established Hong Kong based company that makes hundreds of such motors for thousands of OEMs --I thought I'd be able to buy one easily.

However, Googling around I have been unable to source it, including Johnson Electric's own site which mentions it, but that's all.

So, given the wide knowledge base on this forum, I'm hoping someone might be able to assist me in that endeavour.

Dyson use Johnson motors in a number of machines. The problem we have historically found is that although you may be able to source the same motor number used in another application like a coffee machine or something, the shaft on the end will differ. That bit will be exclusive to the Dyson application.

Dyson tend not to make many parts including the motors from the fans available to the trade. Demand isnt such that the aftermarket will look at doing them.

The motor itself is still functional, it's just that bearings sound like they are shot (it's an 8 year old fan). If I could source the same motor casing, I could simply swap rotors thereby retaining the appropriate shaft. Problem is I'm having difficulty obtaining the specs of the E9IHM with which to compare other motors of that (apparently) brushless DC series.

A faulty machine on eBay is likely to have the same or similar symptoms. I'll pull the motor apart and see if I can rejuvenate the bearings.
