Dyson DC40 Brush Bar Voltage at Connector
« on: December 23, 2018, 08:11:25 pm »
So my sister in law somehow sheared off the actual bar from the screws on her dyson DC40.  Guessing it was hair related...

That being said, it appears everything works on the Dyson except the brush bar doesn't turn.  Checking the voltage at the connector I get 160V DC when I press the button by the power button.

Does that sound right?  I saw 320V DC on another thread, so got me worried before ordering a replacement.

Thanks for the help

should be around 320vdc.
are you sure your meter was set to dc rather than ac ?

If beater was suddenly jammed, the pcb on top of the ball assembly can be damaged.

Dang, definitely getting 160 VDC at the connector.  Stays steady right at 160 VDC, if I flip the connector to off it bleeds off real slowly to zero.

Guessing replacing the PCB along with the brush bar, might not be worth it.

may just be the pcb which has failed, i think the erp versions are expensive but the standard versions are pretty cheap.

you really need to test the head, confirm that is ok or not before moving into the main machine territory.
Then if you know the head motor is ok and reattaching it still doesn't work then start tracing backwards.

The chap is in the US. As they have 120v machines, might a 160vDC be right over the pond? I'm not sure......

Yea sorry, should have mentioned I am across the pond.

This forum is the best one I found on the internet for repairing these machines, so I really appreciate the help.

I had assumed that the brush motor head was dead because I was getting 160V going into the head, but the bars did not spin.  Plus l like I posted before, the bar had been sheared from the outside screw.

I will try to completely disassemble the head and try to double check.

Thanks

oh, wasn't aware of that, what's the usa mains voltage ? 120v ac ?
if so then 160vdc sounds about right so could just be head motor fault

120V AC is correct, maybe one day we will get with the rest of the world.

All signs pointing to the head motor as the fault.

Thanks for all the help, sorry for the confusion.
