Hoover 652A Senior - How to change voltage
« on: December 30, 2018, 09:47:48 am »
Hallo to all Hoover lovers.
I'm nearly addicted to Hoover Upright vacuum cleaners, from the 60s to the 80s and I just bought a 652A in olive green colour that I restored completely.
The real problem is that this particular model was intended to work with a 120-140 Voltage, whereas here the standard voltage is 220-240.
The first solution I found was to buy a voltage converter, but for appliances of about 400 to 600 Watts, this means to buy a very heavy big converter/transformer (half a shoe box, just to give you an idea).
Therefore I resolved that I might replace the motor and find a standard motor, which seems nearly impossible to be found on the hundreds sites of spare parts or used items sites. In addition I live in Milan, Italy, and some sellers do not ship to my country.
I thought you might give me some advice...maybe I do not need to change the all motor, but just to find an intermediate solution, such as replacing a part of it.
Has anybody of you had a similar experience or can give me some advice about where to find a good working 220-240 Volts motor?
Thank you in advance for your kind answers and a Happy New Year!
Massimo

I have two of these I intend to make a good one from two from. If both motors work I will have a spare I can send to Italy. But I am away now so wont be able to check for a week or two.

Beko may have an answer before then.

One way or another the good folks here will get you a motor or a solution.  :icon_nod:

You'll be doing them anyway I expect, I just haven't got around to sending owt down yet.  :underchair:

We can arrange sending from your end anyway, but Italy has to be tracked courier as the Post Office doesn't work so well there, untracked doesn't work at all. Massimo will know this anyway.

Well if Mr Massimo can wait until things fall into alignment send me both the motors, I'll minter them up (if you can check they both run beforehand) and knock the remaining one back in the box and you do the do and ship it over. No charge for the refurb on my part

Thank you so much for the promo and kind replies you all posted. I am astonished at seeing how many efforts, after less than one day from subscription on this forum, have made an effort to help me!
I tell you both that I have no problem waiting and would very much like to see my "new" 120V Senior beating carpets, so I look forward to hearing from you.
In the meanwhile, a very happy and hoovery new year!
Massimo

Not sure if the OP will need a new switch as well? IIRC, the 625 has a footswitch on the UK version, but a handle switch on the US ones. Never really understood why they were different.

I'd probably leave the handle switch as is myself. Interesting bit of info though, I didn't know that.

The reminder spurred me to check my two though, both motors run.........

I'll have the discussion with Mr Beko about the best way forward.

From that brief glance the one with the hood on looks better, but the chassis on the other one seems to have better paint...

If both motors work then on the one without a hood, your 4 screws and unplugging things away from having it out! If you wash the bag then HAND WASH it only or the writing will vanish! Or as said, I'll happily minter up the remaining motor for Max and send it back to Manchester to be shipped onwards to foreign-shire!

Or knock them to bits (handle splits) and I'll make one good one out of both and send you back the spares to put on the shop as stock

This YouTube video shows the handle switch (and lack of a foot switch) on the US version, the Hoover Convertible.

Better. I'll send you both down, make us a good one, breathe on the other motor, and the jobs a good one. I'll get the 2nd motor over to Massimo.

Packed and booked already.

Thank you so much MVacs, how can I write you privately in order to arrange shipping? I told my Hoover the good news and he's really happy :)

Click on his name and send a message. I'll keep you updated although it'll be a week or so before I get to them (will bump them up the queue though a bit!

Do you need any other vacuum spares? I have many, not just for seniors, and can happily lob anything I have in the box whilst you've got one coming anyway, even if you find something from another UK collector I'm sure if it makes its way to Manchester it'll find you
