The Dyson light ball is really quiet, excellent on hard floors and can even pick up large cat biscuits off hard floors too easily! I know it’s because I’ve tried it in my own home. These are durable machines and have a five year warranty from Dyson.

The next best Dyson upright for hard floors is the DC14 with clutch and DC33 which use the same head- they have a large debris channel, however are louder than a Dyson light ball. These are very tough machines too, providing you don’t get a light grey model of DC14 which has brittle plastic

All Dyson balls are suitable for hard flooring

All Dyson cylinders are suitable for hard floors too.

For a big house with open plan I'd go for a commercial Sebo XP3 and not a Dyson.
