Dead X4 diagnosis
« on: December 18, 2018, 08:19:43 pm »
I've just been given a dead X4, which, if resuscitated, will make a perfect partner for my current one year old X4.

Symptoms = nothing happens when switched on. Swapped the bodies over and it's the bottom unit that's the culprit. No visible damage on either pcb or the wiring. What would the pros reckon? (I know I could swap bits from the good one, but after a long day, bashing the keyboard is too tempting...

Just in case this of use to anyone...

The main board was covered in black grime so I couldn't really get a good look at it for burn marks etc. Took it off the machine and gave it a good wash and dry. No popped caps, anything looking burned or suspect soldering. Just for the hell of it, replaced it and the bottom unit and stuck the body on. It works perfectly.

Conductive dust?

There shouldn't be any black grimy dust on the PCB really.

Were it that it would have probably thrown fault lights up. I'd suggest that might be a red herring and it might conk out again.

I'd be looking at the motor for the source of the grimy dust..........

Fair point. Worn brush = graphite = conductive grime. Seems to obvious though.

I'll carry on - until it stops!

What kills the hi/lo numatics is the PCB that steps the voltage up and down gets covered in carbon dust, and after a few years shorts out!

Now you've cleaned it, if it still works it should go on for a good while now/the worn motor brushes make sweet love to the armature
