Miele S512 - Polish up and Refurb!

A fellow collector and good friend called HooverMaster asked me for some help last year with a Miele of his that needed a bit of sparkle, and I was only too happy to oblige! So, in came a box
Not a valid youtube URL
Which contained a very dull vacuum (dull as in finish, not as in to use!)
Now I didn't get the wand, and for good reason as all I can really do with them is rinse it off and give it a wipe down, but they suddenly make packaging a much harder job, so that was not sent. The ratings plate had taken a battering too
The hose end was included, so that gets stripped down a bit to wash
On this generation of Miele hose end, 1 screw holds the clip part on
and it simply pulls off, so you can clean it all out properly
Mr HooverMaster has cleaned the machine out already, but forgot to re-fit the motor sound deadening, which was fine as the machine needed to come apart again to polish so I didn't catch the black plastic, so could be refitted
The floor tool was quite clean, but could do with the extra pep, so we remove the rear wheel which joins the 2 parts together via it's axle
The locking tab pops off, fluff usually gets behind these with age

One of my bugbears with Miele is how bad the baseplate on the floor wears, luckily this one is spotless
Screws out and it's VERY clean under here, someone has been here before I think!
The lint strips pop out of the baseplate
The brushes lift out
AHA! Dirt! (not fully worth all this effort tbh but
The clip that holds the suction duct to the floor head unclips
And the pedal assembly unclips, uncovering yet more filth!
The suction duct can be lifted out now
And the floor head is apart

We can move onto the vacuum cleaner itself now, and this is such a lovely shape of cleaner, and a lovely colour of Corn Yellow
Popping the tool cover reveals some tools, which is nice
And some more dirt
There's such a severe lack of shine, it's a bit weird actually, vacuums are never usually this bad, I think it was frequently wiped down with something abrasive throughout it's life...
Tools out
Pulling the brushes out of the dusting brush reveal some hidden fluff
The spring that makes the tools door pop up can be removed
And the top layer is empty (remember what I say about Miele? Layers!)
Time to remove the very recent and pretty empty bag (which I re-fitted, because it's fine)

The post motor filter is again very recent, so got a quick wash with the rest of the parts just because, but is in no need of replacement
Pre filter is just as clean, and I didn't bother doing anything to it at all
We can now remove the bag door itself
And remove the hinges, which rotate until the little notch lines up with the cutout, then they pull out
Under the bag door is the hose inlet cover
Which is clamped down with this plastic part here
Then the hose bit just lifts out
Which splits out even further!
The bag door latch springs with this HORRIBLE spring, which was already not fitted correctly

so off it came
The blanking plug for the powerhead models pops out, and stops polish buildup in it's crevices
The tool door latch and bag full indicator can come out now
The latch part pulls off the indicator
And the indicator pulls apart itself
Onto the business end now
One screw and the whole panel lifts off the machine and the wiring plug
The wiring loom can be removed from the cover now
Power control knob removed from the panel

The pedals unclip from the centre part
Then the middle part can be unscrewed and lifted off the base of the machine
The post filter cage can come off
Now this is why I wanted it apart. I'm only being paid to polish this and fettle the motor, but it has to come apart like this anyway for polishing, and I can't leave all this carbon grime here!
With this out of the way, we can see the business side of things, and gosh that motor looks like it's been damp before...
The cord reel lifts out after removing one screw
Motor and dust bag seals out
We'll look at this later
The base is very very clean though! Makes a change from my usual fodder

Bumper and associated off
Bag holder out
Wheels off
Wheel holders off
I can get at the pre filter cage now, which just pops out, although I couldnt see that/forgot a bit earlier
A random bit of metal... never seen this on one before
All that went off and was washed, and got cosy in the airing cupboard. Time to see to the motor
Fancase off
Fan off

2 screws under here hold the base of the fancase on
The VERY manky PCB was removed, oodles of water damage on here
And 2 long bolts from the other side hold the rest of the motor together, and it all falls apart like so
I washed the motor casing, so was left with a pile of bits.
New bearings (608zz's, like our host is now selling for Sebo motors) were fitted to replace the utterly trashed ones
The top one fits to the motor housing itself, and just pushed in nicely once the corrosion was cleaned up
The fancase one needs fitting to the armature itself, deep sockets and a hammer help here!
Then the comm was cleaned up, and everything re-assembled after a good fan wash, it spins silky smooth now

Then, the magic happened
and although not 100%, it was a vast, huge improvement!
Now we can do the usual
And nail it all back together! Wheels first
A little drop of grease is key on these, makes it run so much smoother
Fitted!
Possibly critical bit of metal fitted
Pre filter holder fitted

Bumper re-fitted
Bag holder
fitted
The front handle finishing trim is fitted
Sound deadening back in
Motor in
Seals in
Then it all went a bit wrong for the cord reel. See, it was a bit lazy, so I gave it a little tweak and PIIING, it broke itself...
Which is game over really, so annoyingly I ponied up £20 for another cord reel... Which never showed up, so I got a refund for that one, and ponied up £17 for another one! We can see the inner workings though, and it's a shame these gum up so much because you cant get them apart to clean short of having to re-tension the whole thing, which you cant really do without a jig to hold the spring

Some time passed (actually no, I just carried on and fitted the cord reel when it arrived, but for the sake of this thread, you've fitted the reel back in by now!)
So, top cover back on
The wiring was fitted, and the control panel was fitted to the cleaner with it's 1 screw
Post filter holder fitted
The bag cover was hidden inside the machine (they can fall into the void) so that sat under the TV unit for a day to flatten it out, and was fitted along with the hose inlet assembly
to the bag door
The bag and filter went in next
Then the 2 yellow parts were bought together
Tools in
And tool door on

Looking much better now!
Floorhead now, suction duct back in
Pedals on
Brushes, springs and baseplate on
And the tool clip, although not when this pic was taken!
Here is a cord reel, finally! I left it the hell alone and just fitted it, it worked very well!
Post filter in
And gosh, after a few layers of this
It's DONE!

Now, sadly, after all this the motor REALLY was not very healthy
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRLVg79Syug
Which is a shame, but, Hoovermaster, ever the gent he is took it on the chin, and got hold of a much better motor, which was the easy part really, and transformed the machine, and (unless he's fibbing to save my feelings) was really chuffed with how it turned out!
As was I!

Great thread as always. Yeah the motor only lasted a few minutes really but a replacement was obtained, as well as an original style head and much better tube. The bag catch was replaced which has made it work better now. And loads of minor tweaks have made it perfect. Has cost me loads but great to preserve machines like this!
