Sebo switch or power cable
« on: February 18, 2019, 06:26:38 pm »
My Mum's Sebo has finally stopped working. It's had some minor issues with the power cutting out over the last few weeks, and now it's stopped completely. It's over 10 years old so it's not a huge surprise, but it's a disappointment. I'm not sure whether the issue is with the switch on the handle or the power cable itself. I did a quick dismantle of the handle to see if there's anything obviously broken in the switch or signs of burning but nothing. Given the way that the cable is coiled my suspicion is that the cable is the fault, but is there any way to easily check? I'm guessing that I could just try and wire a replacement power cable with the switch out of the handle or I could try connecting the power cable to something else? I don't have access to any testing equipment, so I'm trying to find a safe and simple way to test some things before I bite the bullet and order a new handle - I think £48 online! Thanks for any suggestions.

A simple answer can be achieved with a simple cheap meter.
You will save yourself a lot of time and stress and probably money.

They tend to break internally where the flex enters the machine. Shorten the cable by a few inches.

But I agree a test meter is your friend. We also have Ryevac's handy guide to show you how to use it.

Messages received. I've got access to a multimeter organised and I've looked through RyeVacs guide on using one.  Hoping to find time tomorrow to do some tests. Was slightly concerned about testing the voltage with it plugged in to the mains, so the bit about testing the cable resistance was interesting and I'll try that first. If it isn't the power cable, then I'll have to review the video for the bit about testing switches as I didn't grasp that the first time. Thanks so much for the all the assistance so far and I'll let you know the results of the tests - or have more questions tomorrow.

95% it'll be the cable where it enters the machine.

 :tiphat:
Finally got the power lead and the multimeter in the same place, and it was a break in the first 3-4 inches of power cable. Took a while to get the wires screwed securely into the switch again, but tested it and it all works again. Take a tip from this, get a multimeter and save yourself the cost of (at minimum) a new power cable - I think it was £12-13 on the Sebo spares website. Thanks for the help and I'm sure I'll use the multimeter again - especially now I know how easy it is to use.

Yes as Stu said it would be a break internally on the cable.
Quite a common issue, not just on this model either.

The only way to fail is not to try.
