Shark NV680UKT not impressed.
« on: March 07, 2019, 02:04:08 pm »
Hi
So far this year ive had the misfortune to try and repair 5 sharks of this model.

3 have had burnt out main motors that appear to be not available. The other two are poor suction usual bread and butter faults, But one of them is

really causing a problem it has a blockage mid way in the flexi hose. ive tried my long rod with coarse threaded self tapping bolt on the end to clear it but its not doing the trick, Ive tried sucking it out with numerous different vacuums it wont budge, The handle or bent end is full of electrics springs and latches and doesnt want to come apart, To make things harder the electrics run in the flexi hose so i cant get to rough with it.
Does anyone have a secret way of unblocking flexi hoses i have tried all the usual.........

I know one firm has Shark motors in progress so they'll be available soon.  :icon_nod:

Tragic machines I agree though.

Tragic machines I agree though.

Any ideas how soon? I need one for NV680, the motor is SG5828-01 230V 770W 50Hz.

I’ve been very happy with mine but the motor has burnt recently, just after 2 years of light use, I’ve cleaned the filters regularly every 3 months. I didn’t know you only have one year to register with them to get the 5 years warranty (this doesn’t cover spare parts).

The whole part with motor is £80. It’s annoying that you can’t get the motor anywhere as I imagine that would be £20 tops. Any idea if you can fix the motor somehow? Mine produced lots of black particles, can you not just replace the copper wire?

The ones we knew about that were supposedly in production haven't come through yet. You'll not be fixing a cheap vac motor.

That Chinese link you posted though, is that the correct motor number per your old unit?

Yes, that’s exactly the motor that I’ve found in my NV680, here’s the pictures:

Did these motors ever go into production? Just had a Shark NV680UKT in with a blown main motor, and the motor units are not available.
These motors seem to have a problem where the nut holding the fan comes loose, and the loose fan then jams in the fan housing and destroys itself. You can't even unplug the motor: it's hardwired in, so clearly not designed to be replaced. The pre - motor filtration seems poor, as the motor chamber was chock full of dust, which may explain why there are so many reports of them burning out in a few years.
This is the second one I've had in, but I don't think I'll be doing any more, unless it's just a simple blockage.

You mean have they ever been available for sale? I don’t think so. Someone from manchester vacs got in touch with the manufacturer in china but they weren’t interested in selling unless you ordered big quantities.

I found the firm that made these in China, it was right at the start of Covid and they wanted to prioritise their scaled back production for their existing customers, like Shark and Vax. Buying the MOQ was no problem, but it isn't something I've chased since for several reasons.

Firstly, we are not well up enough on Shark to know which models have which motor in. Parts for cheap machines cause floods of questions on compatibility. And not all Shark motors are the same as far as I know. This will cause floods of returns as people will just buy "a Shark motor" without comparing the old one first. Then, as they're hard-wired in, this will cause floods of returns from amateur fitters who cant join two bits of wire together.

With some parts, it's not just a case of can we get it or can we make it, you've to look at the bigger picture in the context of the general demographic that owns the machines, and the likely customer. We are not interested in selling parts that have a high return rate, and my spidey senses tell me Shark motors might carry a 10-20% return rate. That added to the selling costs and fraud (items not received, returning their old part, etc) would make it an expensive part.

Excellent explanation Stuart, thank you.
I agree that changing the motor on these is not an easy DIY option. There are about 20 torx screws to remove of differing sizes (security ones, not standard torx), and then as you say the motor leads would have to be cut and remade.
The vast majority of Shark customers would simply shell out the required £80 for a new motor unit, which just clips onto the chassis. Assuming that Shark UK actually held stock of them, for which for many models they do not.
