Sebo X4 Extra - motor problem?
« on: May 03, 2019, 09:02:43 am »
Hi

I'd welcome help diagnosing a problem with our Sebo X4 Extra. After running for a short while, there is a burning smell and the sound from the motor becomes uneven. The carbon brushes look as though they still have some life (photo attached). I've removed the vacuum motor (photo attached) but I'm not sure what one can deduce from this. It looks a bit burnt and when I turn the spindle manually, the resistance is uneven. So it can be difficult to turn at first and then becomes much looser and then difficult again. This is the same if I turn it the reverse direction. My assumption is that this motor needs replacing but should I be thinking about any other possible explanation (eg servo motor?).

If I need to replace the motor, does anyone have any (good or bad) experience with using the motor from the 'alternative manufacturer' offered by MV, which is about half the price of the Sebo version?

Thanks for any help!

The motor being loose then tight may be the bearings failing, And causing enough resistance as they get hot to cause the motor to overheat and stop due to this.

be careful doing this but put the motor back in no need to put the belt back on leave black motor cover off and switch on machine while looking at the carbons and com if there is a lot of sparks flying from brushes could be the motor is finished, will need replacing

Thanks, TV Man. I've followed your suggestion. When the motor runs with the cover off and the belt is disconnected, it's fine. There's no sparks, no smoke and the sound is good. When i connect the belt, however, that all changes. There's sparks and smoke. Do you think this shows for sure that the extra load is causing overheating, etc and the motor needs replacing?

Sounds like the brush or something is siezing if its fine with no belt on

The top bearing will have failed and maybe damaged the armature. It will be evident under load. Try moving the spindle from side to side and it will rattle I'd guess. You *can* replace the bearing (we stock it and the tool you need to remove it) but that's a job better tackled by those experienced in rebuilding motors.

The best way forward for you will be to replace the motor. The alternative manufacturer ones are OK, we've yet to have one fail, but the originals are of undeniable quality. You get what you pay for though.

Thanks for the reply, MVacs.

The spindle doesn't move from side to side or rattle, but it doesn't turn smoothly and the bearings sound very 'dry' when I turn it. So your diagnosis is probably right.

Does the Alternative Manufacturer motor come with its own carbon brushes or do they need to be bought separately?

I would have thought they include brushes, never heard of a motor being supplied without them.

Thanks to every that replied. I’ve ordered a replacement motor, and hope that sorts this out.  😊😊😊

Will sort it i think, never had a bad motor myself on a sebo - but i don't do that many sebos in my area.
Does sound like motor bearing to me too, especially if it's ok off tension load.
The only way to fail is not to try.
