Hoover Turbopower 2 – loud whirring noise
« on: June 02, 2019, 05:44:07 pm »
Please help me work out what's wrong with my Hoover Turbopower 2.

It's making a loud whirring noise. It's so strong, I can feel the vibrations in the base of the cleaner. Also, if left running it seems to give off an unnerving smell.

What's frustrating is that I can't find the cause. The sound / vibration appears to be strongest in the left-hand corner of the base (when upturned), around where the belt meets the agitator. If I disengage the belt, the sound is normal. The agitator turns freely enough. I've also fully opened up the base but found no loose parts or foreign material.

Below is an audio recording of the noise and another of cleaner with the agitator disengaged. The image shows the base upturned with the area where the noise / vibration strongest circled in red.

Any ideas?

Mmmm, its definatly something to do with the brushroll then, it sounds fine with the belt off.

If you feel brave, try running it with the baseplate off, dont have your face right over it though! That will rule out any issue with the baseplate causing it to not sit right.

Have you had the brushroll apart to fully check that the brushroll bearings? It might spin fine by hand but if their gubbed, once under tension they can do odd things. How new is the belt too?

The last thing I would check is the cutouts in the chassis for the brushroll end caps. Do they look worn?

Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction, beko1987.

Rotating the agitator slowly by hand, I found that once every revolution it hits a point where it seems to nudge or settle into place. This seems to be the cause of the whirring noise. Before that, I dismantled the agitator, cleaned it and lubricated the moving parts including the ball-bearings. The metal cutouts in the chassis look pretty solid and the belt's brand new.

Dismantling the agitator revealed that the receptacle in the agitator body that accommodates the metal ball-bearings case seems a bit chewed up. (Photos below.) This also happened to be where the smell was coming from. I've since lined it with slither of rubber and the good news is that this seems to have taken the noise away—at least for now.

But I've still no idea what's going wrong. Perhaps the ball-bearings were remaining stationary while the agitator was simply spinning against their casing. (That'd account for the smell.) The only thing I know for sure is that I need a new agitator.

Any idea where I can get one?

Anyone out there know where I can pick up a replacement agitator / brush-roll for a Hoover Turbopower 2 (as per above)?

I'd suggest sending Beko a PM.

Sorry, hello!

Mmm, the ends of that brushroll shell don't look too bad. they crop up brand new either genuine or pattern on ebay alot.
Quick test bodge though, wrap some electrical tape around the outer shell of the bearing, just so it's a tight fit into the end of the brushroll, it won't need much. Does it quieten down?

If it does, buy a pair of brushroll bearings from Stuart, repeat the packing out with tape and job done!
