DC17 US Stopped working shortly after service.
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:58:49 pm »
DC17 works very well, but I must disassemble beater bar head every 30-60 days to remove hair from beneath belt, drive and from bearing.  Two weeks ago, I did this and restored the vacuum to working order. Two days later, it would not power on. Neither the vacuum, nor the beater bar work. I have power fore and aft of the vacuum motor switch, as well as the beater motor switch. I even replaced the two switches. I have continuity on the neutral ( white ) side before the wire heads to the motors. However, I do not have continuity at the reset switch ( open or closed ), even if I bypass it. Therefore, I cannot get either motor to operate.

Anything else I can try?

Thank you in advance.

Does the motor run if you put a direct feed to it?

I spent much of last evening taking the vacuum apart, and cleaning dust and lint from cavities I didn't know existed. I have the vacuum motor exposed and ready to power the brush lugs directly.... then on to the beater motor. Will share shortly.

I created a jumper from a power cord and gator clips.  No sign of life from either motor.  Could both have croaked at the same time?

Very unlikely.

Just to clarify, you put a live and neutral direct to each motor bypassing any switches?

Yes I did.   Very late, I did a more thorough inspection and found (1) female connection on both of the stators to be burnt.  After some gentle cleaning and filing to expose the metal at the connections, I retested and now both are working......  I have to imagine that my spouse is running this thing when it is howling and it's causing the overheating.

Anyting I should do before I reassemble?

Thank you!

I have never come across that really. Very seldom would I expect to see connections fouled up in that way on a 220-240v Dyson. I cant see why a 110v one would be any different.

Most of the time, a cable or terminal overheating is going to be caused by a bad connection somewhere. Just be sure all your spades are nice and tight as you reassemble, and tell the wife not to hammer it like a racing car and see how it goes.

That's a puzzling one for sure.

If anyone has any other advice - do please chime in.

Question.  Can't seem to get a good read on the how the upright microswitch rested inside the vacuum case. I have the vacuum upside down with the cord reel near, the cleaning head pointing away. Now that I have cleaned the case, I do not have the dust mark from where the switch was originally located.

Thanks again for all your comments and help.

Well,   short success.  I did in fact get the whole unit reassembled.  However, it only ran for 2 minutes before the vac motor stopped again.  I took it apart to find the forked contact for the spring loaded stator on one side to be fouled again.  I cleaned it, checked it and reassembled it.
Once again, it stopped within a couple of moments.

Now, I have been fantasizing about setting it at the curb or in a bin for trash tomorrow.

Time for a new motor I think if its fouling up so quickly.
