Hoover Module 900 S4338 - Stripdown and Refurbishment!
« on: June 18, 2019, 12:00:26 AM »
This little vacuum came my way for 'a quick polish of the hood, it doesn't need much'...

Before all that though, the usual before video

TBH it ran really good. However, in order to polish the plastic, it needed to be stripped down, because I hate catching the edge of stuff with the polisher, ad it's always much easier when its apart.

It's basically a dry only Hoover Aquamaster

ila_rendered

This shows the dull finish of the hood

ila_rendered

Cable off, and we take a fleeting look at the bag housing, but this has been washed already, as it was a bit filthy apparently, so we won't touch that

ila_rendered

Filter is spotless too, again it's been washed

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

We just need this bit

ila_rendered

The handle unscrews with a screw at either end, with a plastic retaining ring to make the screw captive

This all spins off nicely to remove the screws from the brackets

ila_rendered

The brackets are removed from the handle by tapping the two retaining pins out

ila_rendered

Time to find some screws

ila_rendered

One is visible, the other sits under this cover

ila_rendered

The top lid lifts off

ila_rendered

The switch cover pops out

ila_rendered

Next, we need to remove the mains cable. Interestingly, this vacuum dates from the late 1980's, the cord clamp is identical to the ones used on the early 1960's Hoover Juniors!

ila_rendered

The cable exit grommit can be pulled off the cable too

ila_rendered

And with that off, we can get the switch lifted up

Nice and simple wiring here

ila_rendered

That part done, time to move down a level and remove the motor exhaust diffuser

ila_rendered

Then 4 more screws lifts the inner motor housing up and off, revealing the true condition of the machine (the owner did really clean it up when he got it externally, this has seen some proper use by all accounts before it was saved)

ila_rendered

Hello motor

ila_rendered

Top sealing ring removed

ila_rendered

Sound deadening removed

ila_rendered

And out with the motor

ila_rendered

Fancase seal out

ila_rendered

There is a bucket seal too, but it seemed glued in so I left it alone

Next off is the cage designed to stop the motor sucking the filter up into the suction vent

ila_rendered

Which just unscrews

ila_rendered

The motor itself has another seal on the top of the fancase, which gets sealed down from the top with the inner housing, this is removed

ila_rendered

The motor however, throughout all this was raining crap onto my work carpet...

ila_rendered

Off came the fancase

ila_rendered

The top cooling fan cover unscrews from the motor

ila_rendered

Revealing...  :o :o :o :o :o :o

ila_rendered

The top cooling fan unscrews

ila_rendered

There was a picture of the general state of the motor from the side, but it's really blurry so this is the pile of crap after I spent 15 minutes picking every bit of filth out of the thing, and removing the fan for washing...

I then had a look at the plug, and noticed the neutral cable was showing bare wire

ila_rendered

Plus the plug itself was dirty, so to complete the full anal that I am known for, it came apart for washing!

ila_rendered

So, everything was washed, dried, and then POLISHED!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Much better!

Time to be laid out for a pretty picture

ila_rendered

Then the Hamster gave me a hand re-assembling! (Fun fact, I'm typing this on the very same Thinkpad T43 as in the picture! It would have been running MX Linux at the time, but now runs a very striped down Windows 7 which is going much better on it)

ila_rendered

After shot of the motor. the motor ran really REALLY well, so I didn't dis-assemble it to fully wash the plastic parts as I didn't want to break it, so this is as good as it got

It's these HATEFUL ruddy wiring connections, I always end up ripping the plug out of the motor when I try and unplug them

ila_rendered

Anyway, the top and bottom fans got replaced and the cooling fan cover replaced

ila_rendered

Top seal fitted

ila_rendered

Top fancase seal fitted

ila_rendered

Lower fancase seal is fitted to the chassis

ila_rendered

Motor dropped in

ila_rendered

Sound deadening dropped in

ila_rendered

The motor wiring runs up the top through a little hole

ila_rendered

All back into the switch

Exhaust diffuser dropped on

ila_rendered

The switch cover is fitted, and the top sound damper foam is hot glued onto the underside of the lid

ila_rendered

Lid fitted

ila_rendered

Handle fitted

ila_rendered

Plug end wiring before

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Much tidier

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Time to cover this up

ila_rendered

And wouldn't you know it, we are done!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Looks even better with a few coats of wax

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And we are done! just a quick polish, nothing too in depth...
