Dyson DC08 Panasonic Motor Problem
« on: November 07, 2010, 11:17:59 pm »
I have a Dyson DC08 I am trying to repair. Apparently it kept cutting out after a time, and on inspection looks as though the filters were blocked.

It needs a  new switch as the old one wouldn't stay down, and some new filters

However, I have taken it apart, and with the switch bypassed it still doesn't run. Is there a thermocouple on this model that might have failed? or does it have a cut-out that means it wont operate with the casing undone?

Is there a thermocouple on this model that might have failed?

There are two possible motors fitted to DC08's. A YDK (with a number on it starting "YV") or a Panasonic. The YDK is the more popular; that has a thermocouple screwed to the outside of it that is easy to swap and not expensive.

or does it have a cut-out that means it wont operate with the casing undone?

I don't recall they have such a device.

Have you checked that you have a live at the other side of your switch bypass? It may sound a silly question, but most cylinders that are inexplicably dead have a break in the cable inside or in the rewind mechanism. Testing the live at the switch would help us eliminate the cable/rewind mechanism being at fault.

If you have a live at the switch, I would remove the motor and bench test it before doing anything else.

Blocked filters would cause the motor to cut out as you suggest, but having cooled down, it should run again. That's why I want you to check the continuity of the lead and that you are getting power first.

I have used a simple continuity tester to test fuse, live and neutral from plug to end of cable. Also tested the smalcables going through to motor. Connected straight through to motor without switch (which is dead anyway). Nothing at all. Motor has a label which says UDS1554CNA Matsushita Electrical. Assume motor must be dead??

One other thing. When I first got it home I plugged it in and pressed the on switch and I would would swear it ran for about 2 seconds....

Check the motor brushes if the ends are pitted and rough the armiture has burnt out.
You could be lucky and have sticky brushes, this happens when the machine is blocked and the motor gets really hot ( just before thermal cut out) sometimes this causes the oil in the carbon brushes to seap out and hold the brushes back a bit. remove the brushes from there holder, if they don't jump out tap them gently when they release , if they are still of a fair lenth, clean the sides of the brushes with some fine grit water paper 300 grit normally works well, don't rub to much.

If this is not the case you have a broken winding some were in the motor

You got the machine from somewhere, got it home, tried it, it started to work for a second and then nothing. It will be the motor as VCH above says.

The UDS1554CNA Matsushita motor is the Panasonic one I mentioned; the lesser popular one of the two.

We need to establish if the motor is shot before I give you replacement options.

Took out the brushes. Each one had a black deposit on one side rest was silver and smooth. Cleaned and replaced. When I switched on there was a shower of sparks! so I quickly switched off.  Now it won't run again. checked brushes again but still clean.

PS I may have accidentally wired live and neutral wrong way first time  :snivel:

Thanks. I need a new switch as well. also the HEPA is black and the other filter won't let water through, which I understand means it is blocked.

We haven't got a used DC08 UDS1554CNA Matsushita Panasonic motor that is good enough to send you. I just checked all our suppliers and telephoned our Dyson motor guru. Nobody supplies that old Panasonic Matsushita motor any more. The easiest way to replace the motor on your machine is to fit a YDK motor to it. You need to change the big rubber seal only to do this.

A new motor is £35. We will throw you the correct fan case seal in for free with that.
A washable filter is £8
A HEPA filter is £9 (You could fit a post motor pad instead - they are only £4)
A switch is £3.

Delivery is free.

That's a total of £55 (or £50 if you fit a post motor pad instead of a HEPA filter). If you want to go ahead with that, you can pay us from this page, email me with your delivery address and link this topic.

Thanks for your help. Have send a Paypal payment for £50 as don't see the point of a HEPA
