Can this model be used hooked up to an orbital sander ?
« on: September 09, 2019, 06:09:20 pm »
Hello, i have a general question and would appreciate any constructive thoughts on the subject. Thanking you ahead for your time in reading and considering the question.

I have 2 old machines that still work, a DC04 and a similar machine that
has Root Cyclone 8 written on it. I was looking to hook either one up to a hand held orbital
sander i have, to extract wood dust from the machine. Now i appreciate that this is not the
normal application of a Dyson and i do realise that any advice you may care to offer would
not reflect on yourselves if any problems occur, but i have a couple of questions please ?

Would it be better to run the machine in this application with either of the filters removed ?
( Any dust escaping would not be much of a problem, as it is a dusty shed and i wear a good
quality breathing mask ) I'm thinking in terms of reducing blockages that slow the work down.
Woodwork is a hobby, not my normal work, so the machine would not be running for hours.

Are there any other factors you suggest i take into account ?

Thanks

One thought: don’t run the machine without the sponge premotor filter because any particles that pass by the cyclone that are not trapped by the filter will go straight to the motor and shorten the life of the motor considerably.

Thanks Angus, appreciate the point you make.
I'm really fishing for any useful advice in using the machine in this application.
Historically i did use a Nilfisk bag model. Short little thing, a bit like R2D2, lol,
but damn it was good. A bit like a Dyson, the design was a classic. i had looked
to buy another, but the ' 30 Somethings ' into design, have pushed the price up to
stupid levels. Almost Unobtainium now.

I have seen Dysons used in such a way. In fact, Dyson took inspiration for his early designs from a sawdust extracting machine. As long as you keep an eye on the filter it should be alright.

Personally I'd be more inclined to use a tub machine with a reusable bag in that application. But as you have two old Dysons handy, why not use those?

Thanks for both this reply and on my other issue. Yes, i fully agree, the Nilfisk did the job very well. Unfortunately it went walkabout.

I take your point onboard regarding the filters. Is there an advantage regarding possible blockage/overheating in leaving out the post motor filter ?

I'd suggest the post motor filter is useless in that application. I'd probably remove it. Especially if its a HEPA.

I've used a DC02 for a major renovation of my mums massive hallways before (plaster off the brickwork etc) and it was fine!

What you want to do is get 3 or 4 cheap used pre motor filters. That way, when they clog up, just swap out and continue, and clean the filthy one up, a good bash about outside will probably work, a trip through the washing machine brings them up like new!

Then as MV says, remove the post motor filter so any fine dust can escape and it'll probably be perfectly fine! For added oomph, remove the belt so it's not pointlessly spinning away (even more so on a non clutched machine as the brushroll will be roaring away as well.

When it blows up, simply go onto facebook marketplace/gumtree and pick up another working one for £10!
