Machine cuts out - had it repaired but on going issue,
« on: September 09, 2019, 06:15:46 pm »
Hello,

It started doing this earlier this year. i checked the motor housing and it was not hot. Would not restart even the next day, so i took it in for repair to a local. he returned it and said that the motor had 'rocked off' it's mountings. Is this feasible ?

After little use it has again stopped and failed to start. I feel i'm capable of repairing it but wondered what i am likely to find, if it is as stated a motor mounting problem. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and i would really appreciate any tips for a fix. Otherwise it is a cracking machine.

Thanks in advance.

I fail to see how a DC04 motor can have ‘rocked off its mountings’, it’s encased in a plastic motor bucket. Even if the motor were to become dislocated somehow it would have to do 180° turn inside the casing to unplug itself. That bloke was pulling your leg.

You need to strip it down and benchtest the motor. It could be a dodgy motor it could be an intermittent power cord issue. Either way, they are not terribly complex to work on and spares are readily available inexpensively.

Thank you for your speedy reply. You confirmed what i thought, he was B***S****ing me.
I did try him out with a DC24 problem i had. Demonstrated to him how it howled like a banshee when the brushbar
was operational. He took a look and had no idea....

Thanks to you, a quick telephone to you and the problem diagnosed, parts supplied by you...  Purrs like a cat now.
I hope all my dealings with you in future go as smoothly. From the little i've seen when working on them, they are indeed
well designed for longevity.

I plan on testing the power cord whilst flexing it and i have  multimeter, any suggestions as to testing the motor would be helpful,
or do i just bring the dang thing in ?

I'd do as you suggest with the flex first, whip it off, flex it about and see it has continuity. Whip the motor out, see the armature looks alright, and run it on the bench and make sure its not getting too hot or sparking.

Switches don't tend to go intermittent, so it must be between the motor and the flex.
