Spring connection DC18
« on: January 12, 2020, 10:49:46 am »
Hi,

My DC18 has pathetic suction and I'd tried it without filters and it was still pretty rubbish. I decided to disassemble further to see if I could find anything else wrong and I'm just putting it back together, but I can not for the life of me figure out what this was attached to. It clearly has some important purpose, but I can't fathom what it is, where it connects to, or even it's location on the exploded parts diagram I found on this forum.

It looks like the attached image.

Any help would be most appreciated.

It looks to be the bit that sits at the opposite side of here.

One end of that spring is here:

The other end is here:

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have spent some more time trying to make this work, thus the slow reply!

My original hypothesis was that the spiral piece of metal attached (by the small metal loop end) to exactly where you said it did using the black plastic piece, but I'd actually discounted it because I couldn't make the distances work out.

Do you think the shape of the spiral piece of metal looks correct in my original photo? I'm wondering if it has gotten seriously bent and thus why I can't fit it back into place.

I measured the length of the spiral piece, and then that distance from the connection point and it's nowhere near where the spiral end is!

If I force the spiral piece down towards where it's meant to go, the large spiral is approximately on top of the point where it should be mounting to the black plastic piece. If it is indeed the smaller end of the spiral piece that connects to the black plastic, then I can only guess that mine has got bent or perhaps I need to exert a lot of force which is tricky in such a small space!

Here you can see the large spiral part over the mount part.

Thanks a lot for your excellent advice so far!

This is very hard to answer without having the machine on the desk.

We stripped our museum machine down a little bit to take the photos above a couple of days ago.

The trouble with the DC18 is they were never a very high volume machine so very few people have worked on them very often which means almost nobody knows them off by heart like we would do a more popular model.

With any other mainstream model we’d be able to look at it and say, “oh yes that goes there”. But not with the DC18, at least not without it being on the desk.

Thus it is a very difficult question to answer at a distance.

I disassembled it even further and was finally able to get the pieces into what I believe are the correct places! That said, I'm still not convinced that spiral piece is completely correct, but the mechanism works and I am happy to give up there!

Thank you so much for your assistance!

Update: Finally completed reassembly and tested it out. I'm not entirely sure what I did (and I'm pretty sure the pieces I had real trouble with had no impact on the improvement at all!), but the vacuum is back to the suction I remember!

Thanks a lot for your help!
