Author Topic: Removing the toothed pulley from a Sebo X4 motor. (Read 3125 times)

I have a Sebo motor which is OK but needs new bearings. To replace the top bearing the pressed on toothed pulley wheel needs to be removed.
I have tried all of my small pullers including the bit rough and ready puller, sold by Manchester Vacs for bearing removal. None worked so I made up a steel jig to support the toothed wheel, so that I could drift the shaft out of the wheel. Even with a lump hammer on the drift, it will not budge.
The usual heating dodges are out because of the proximity of the plastic bearing housing. Do I have a particularly tight fitting motor shaft? It must come off, otherwise Manchester Vac wouldn't sell replacement bearings.
If there is no one out there with a better idea, I will cut the shaft below the toothed pulley and machine up a connecting sleeve and use anerobic adhesives to reassemble the shaft / pulley wheel after the bearings have been changed,

The toothed cog isnt pressed on, it unscrews. I believe it's a left hand thread.

Well that serves me right for making assumptions! I should think the threads must be past their best after my treatment of them!

Amazingly enough the toothed pulley unscrewed without any drama! You are correct when you say they are pretty sturdy. In my defence, I reckon most manufacturers would have pressed it on! Motors are throw away items these days. BUT I should have checked first.

Before I press the new bearing on, can I ask how you get at the bottom bearing for replacement? I THINK I know, but this time I am asking FIRST (breaking the habits of a lifetime!!). The bottom bearing feels good, but maybe I should replace it while I am at it.

The motor was the original one and I replaced it with a new one from yourselves, a year or three ago. It is in reasonable condition and simply needed the bearing change, so it is just a spare. Having had the X4 for well over 15 years, I am looking for a good few years more (Yes I am a cheapskate!).

Thanks for the video! Very informative and I think I would have managed the bottom bearing, it came apart more or less as I thought. So no whistling emojos or red faces this time! Now I am reassured as to the stripdown, I will get it done tomorrow.

An early start this morning. Bottom bearing replaced a la video and top bearing already done. Cleaned up the commutator (it didn't need skimming in the lathe) and got it all back together. It is now in the plastic packing and box that the replacement motor came in.

I presented it to the Boss, saying that it was her spare Sebo motor and could she put it with the Vac bags and filters. Crafty ploy to fee up a little more workshop storage space!
