DC02 Recyclone
« on: April 28, 2020, 11:19:04 pm »
Hi,

I have a DC02 Recyclone with the serial Number: 713-A-011956 and a date of: 13/06/97 on the label underneath the unit.

It is very clean with no damage, and works very well for an old machine, the only small issue is the power cord does not always lock when pulled out and trys to retract.

The question I have which I hope someone can answer is if the date on the label is for it's date of production, as when I search the number on the Dyson site it came back with it being shipped on 06/02/2006. Also could anyone tell me how many DC02 Recyclones were produced as I read that they were a bit of an experiment being made from recycled plastic.

Thanks

We have one in our museum.

They were supplied in a hessian bag, with instructions on recycled paper. Dyson tried to be very green with these.

The one we have is the only one I have ever seen in the flesh. So I think they were very low volume indeed. Beyond that, I don't know much more about them.

Someone else here may know more.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I wonder if you could tell me what tools came with the Recyclone as I think the ones I have are not the originals.

It would be nice to know how many were produced which would probably affect it's value if I wanted to sell it, as after giving it a bit of a clean it seems a shame to use it.

Thanks

Hi,
Thanks again for the rapid response, I don't suppose you would have any of those tools in your shop would you, or are they like rocking horse stuff as well.
Thanks

Good evening, I seem to recall Dyson states in his autobiography that 400 Recyclone DC02s were made. And as Mvacs says, they came packaged in a re-useable bag. Hope that helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the information.

I contacted Dyson via their facebook account and was informed that although he did not have the production figures he was thought that 10-15,000 were produced, and were sold from July 1997, the numbers seem a bit high.

I did read on a japanese website that the project using recycled plastic was not succesful as the amount used had to be augmented by other materials to make it useable and therefore not viable.

Thanks again.

I would not imagine there were that many made. When you consider the other limited edition Dysons, the Recyclone is much more elusive than the others. I doubt Dyson care about these models to be honest- they probably just plucked a figure off the top of their heads! Did their response also include ‘would you consider purchasing a new machine?’

I recently moved to a smaller abode and found that I had no place for the 2 vacuum cleaners that I have, which are a Hoover Aquamaster and a Dyson DC02.

I decided to give the Dyson a clean and put it in the loft as a spare and use the Hoover as the main machine, I thought I would put some new filters in the Dyson after cleaning it.
Looking online for spares I was made aware that the model I have is a very rare beast, and very much sort after by collectors, it is the Recyclone model with the serial number: 713-A-011956 and Date: 13/06/97.

I was intrigued by this and contacted Dyson(and this forum) for some information via their Facebook account, and was informed that my machine would have been one of the first machines produced of this model that went on sale in July 1997, I also read on various websites that only around 400 were produced, as the idea of using recycled plastic for this model was not viable due to the need of other materials having to be added to the mix to make it useable.

I am not a collector of vacuum cleaners, and finding out that the Dyson is very rare and fetches a high price it would seem silly putting it up in the loft, I therefore have it for sale to someone who will appreciate it, and I should get enough to purchase a new top of the range Dyson, or more it would appear.

The good points are: it is the Recyclone model in working order, and cleaned up well.
The bad points are: the power cable retractor does not lock out and there is a little wear from the plug brushing the casing when retracting, also the tools are not the originals.

Not sure of the best place to sell it yet so any advice would be welcome, would probably get a better price over in the States but postage might be a problem and ebay seems to be too hit and miss.

A well-written eBay listing would do it. Make sure you tick the Global Shipping option so that Americans can bid too (you will ship the the UK and eBay will forward). Be sure to write the voltage.

Its optimistic hoping for £200-300 IMO, but if you get it, I might flog mine.  :icon_nod:

It is difficult to put a price on a rare item, and the Dyson DC02 Recyclone vacuum cleaner is a rare item, with only approximately 400 produced, and the first vacuum manufactured from recycled plastic in the World.
Thinking that it would have cost somewhere between £150 -200 in 1997 when it was released to the public, it would be somewhere around £280-360 today with inflation.

To compare it with another collectable item, The Penny Black stamp, the World's first adhesive stamp.
The Penny Black was produced from 1840 and obviously cost one penny, which with inflation would be over 100 times that today(43p).
Although there were 68,808,000 stamps printed, today individual stamps sell from around £100 to £3000 depending on condition.

I understand that there are more people in the world that collect stamps than collect vacuum cleaners, and prices normally reflect demand, but I do think a clean working example of a recyclone should be worth more than the new cost of a similar machine of today.

Please let me know your thoughts on pricing.

I agree with your theory on pricing, but as you’ll know, it’s far from an exact science.

We’ve got some of the rarest Dysons there are, and do sell the odd one as the collection changes. They usually do OK with the tailwind that a lot of collectors follow us on social media and share rare offerings among other collectors on the private Facebook groups that exist. But cylinders do less money overall I find.

It’s not unheard of for Dyson to buy the odd one back either.

I’ve yet to look to see what tools for this we may have, if any. I will.

I’m curious to see how you do with this as we now have two very rare DC12s, also a cylinder, and I may move one of those along this year.

That’s the thing about letting an auction run. It’s pure market forces. You only want two people who want a Recyclone, who have that search registered on eBay or Google alerts set for it. In the latter case, they’ll be pointed to this topic already soon enough.

Hi, just in case it helps. Originally the standard DC02 was sold at £200, the Recyclone being a more expensive model at £220. (According to JD’s book). I do not think it boasted any extra features over the standard 02, it was merely because it was “green” (in both appearance and environmental impact!)
So whether or not that helps you to price it is up to you. As has been said before, I can’t imagine it has depreciated that much in value.
