what is the most powerful dyson upright available currently, I have a dyson dc40, what betters that in terms of suction

Are you in the UK? A Dyson light ball (now blue version called Small ball) is better at floor cleanng as it cleans carpets wayyyy better also on hard floors as well. Hose suction is less though but it's quieter and better designed than the DC40 with it's improved tweaks

In terms of suction, I’d say a non clutched DC07.

May I ask, why are the non-clutched Dysons more powerful? I was thinking of buying a DC07 Origin, but as I also have hard floors, it seems like a clutched DC07 might make more sense. Thing is, I really like the look of the iconic yellow DC07 Origin, but I believe they are all non-clutched....

In the UK the yellow Origin are all non clutched. Unless someone builds a clutched one as we did >here<.

The non clutched seems to have the edge as its direct drive instead of the drive being diverted through a clutch. They always seem to have more suction. But I haven't actually compared them on a meter.

The non clutch is very effective on carpet as its designed for that and so has a different brushroll to the non clutch.

But the clutched DC07 is a super machine still.

As above. I love the DC07 for the reason they have the most amount of suction.
The origins performance are better because they are non clutched. Clutched and non clutched brushrolls differ slightly, not only is one round and one sort of helix, but the clutched brushrolls kind of "bite" into the carpet better- they groom the carpet fibres better which results in more dirt being picked out.
