Hi!
Time for another refurb thread, and this one came as one lot of 3. Some we have seen/will see.
From the first generation of Turbopower
From September 1984
I did the usual before video
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-04ImyN0b8
Then by the looks of it bought it in from the rain and removed the 2 handle screws
Off
The wiring harness locating peg came out next
Pop the switch out

Undo the wires and remove it all from underneath
Bag time now
To get the bag door off, remove the 3 screws on the trunnion cover. Holding the bag door at an angle makes easy access to the 2 top ones
Lift the whole thing off
I don't usually do this but one of them was broken so I gingerly popped the bag door hinges out, and removed them from their holder
The air freshener, which had mutated into some foul, acrid smelling creature comes off next
Then we can remove the latch and handle for the bag door

The bag clip came off the Sainsburys bag and in the bin that went
Onto the bag fill tube now, 2 screws and it pulls out
Wiring cover next
The motor wires can be unscrewed from the block first
and the whole spine cable can be withdrawn, and the handle socket removed
Time to dig out the autoflex housing screw
Sometimes they just pop out, but usually you need to put a screw into them and pull with pliers

All this cable brake is loose and ready to come out now
We can disconnect the brown wire from the Autoflex assy
But first the blue needs to come out, from by the motor. So...
Height adjuster knob off
Baseplate off
Brushroll off
Hood off
Unplug the wires from the motor and pull them through, then the autoflex unit can be removed

The whole cord reel will loose tension, but don't worry about that for now.
Separate the reel and cable guide by removing the plug on the end of the flex.
Then the brake lever can be removed
Wonder WTF all that string is doing there...
The flex has strain relief in the form of this rubber ring around the first loop of flex
To remove, undo the 2 cord terminal screws
And a cord clamp
Then, feeding the flex out of the rubber ring it can all come off!
I bet the Hoover dealer chaps ruddy hated sticking a new cord on an autoflex turbopower!

35+ years of filth can be seen in the bellows
Back up top though, the cord rewind button can be slid out
The choc block unscrews too
Onto the brushroll now, which was a bit peaky...
I don't think it's a genuine roller, although it's in good nick. Never seen a genuine Hoover brushroll axle rust like that.
Under the bearing carriers was certainly a bit filthy
More grot on the other side

Nice worn Quаltex belt here
Belt guard slides out from underneath
Under the hood was very grimy
Motor has certainly not seen a clean for many decades
Original genuine lightbulb is removed
Then we can get to the back chassis pivot clamps!
Very carefully remove the back chassis from the base

Next up is to remove the big motor clamp
Then we can pull the motor out
I presume it's for use in the home...
The anti vibration sponge was pulled off as it's always full of grit and needs washing properly.
This is something you only do on these first generation Turbopowers, remove the front wheel spring clamps! They did away with these very early on
The wheels and spring then come out as usual
Because the axle is particularly dirty, I dismantled the front wheels too
The two tabs holding the stepper for the height control on can be pushed down and off now
Then removed fully

Furniture guard is removed now
Then the recline lock pedal
Rear wheel caps now (these pop off from behind, never lever them off from the front or you'll snap the tabs)
Then the wheels themselves can come off, removing the small circlip along the way
Nice and un-worn
Time to strip the motor down now. Rubber ends off
Bellows removed
And it's time for wiring! The pictures below make sense to me as I took it apart, but the black wire comes from the first carbon brush
Which is in fab order

Then the red wire goes off to the bulb holder
Which just pulls off
This brown goes from the terminal to coil
The same with the blue on the other side
One last black going to the other carbon brush
Now we need to open the fancase. Pop the 3 metal clips off
and separate the fancase
Using a big flatblase screwdriver in the slot at the back of the belt spindle, turn the fan off the armature
One metal and one fibre washer will sit beneath it. The fan still had sand on it from the before video

Now, undo the 4 screws
and remove the bottom half of the motor
Depress the tabs locking the carbon brush holders in and push those out and that is all the wiring disconnected.
This rusty mess is easier than it looks. A good small screwdriver will pop the metal lock washer up and out. It might split it in 2, which is fine as it pushes back down, and makes it easier to extract
That done, the field coil can be removed from the motor housing
Then the armature itself
The top bearing has anti vibration stuff over it's bearing
It just pops out

Like so
A bearing puller next gets the bearing off
Then the cooling fan twists off too
It was proper clogged up, this is what makes Turbopower cleaners sound like shit nowadays unless they've been done by a collector.
That done, everything was washed
Dried and..
Polished
Then laid out

It came up really quite well!
And with all the metalwork run over the wire wheel, it was time to fit the armature back together, with a nice new 608ZZ bearing
and the spotless cooling fan
Belt spindle end spring and dampers are refitted
and the armature sat in
Then the coil can be fitted in place

The new fancase bearing can go into place and the old clip re-used
Carbon brushes refitted
The 2 halves can then be screwed together. Once all 4 screws are tight, it should spin freely and sound smooth.
The wiring can start going back on now
Then the fan, with the 2 washers first
This next bit looks worse than it is as I was struggling with a drying up tube, and it's just sat on the top of the groove, so when the fancase is refitted it squashes out evenly.

Any squeezage can easily be sorted with a quick wipe down anyway afterwards
We'll refit the bellows (make sure the lock part of the cable tie is at the top of the motor. If it's at the bottom the bag compartment catches it...)
Time to fit some wheels, with a nice smear of grease on everything
More grease on the pivot point of the recline pedal
and it's fitted along with it's spring
Furniture Guard slotted on
Then the height adjuster bits
