Replacing DC04?
« on: August 09, 2020, 08:59:25 pm »
My DC04 made a burning smell and now won't turn on. I'd guess it's the motor, but it looks like replacing my be more economical than repairing. I'm thinking of a used DC14 or DC25, but open to other suggestions (or brands). Quite liked the bagless aspect of the Dyson. This would be for a 3 bed house, no pets, and all bar the kitchen and bathrooms is carpeted. Thanks!

Cheaper to repair if motor has failed.

Thanks. Refurb models are going for less than getting someone to replace that motor, though. Appreciate it would be cheaper to DIY, but I'm not great at this stuff and there's also the risk I replace the motor and find out something else is gubbed...

You would probably have to clean and grease beater bar bearings (dc04) and if clutched probably rebuild the clutch mechanism - i would anyway. Belt and post filter is a minimum requirement too

Dc14 clutched are good imo, sold many over the years, solid reliable machine.
Dc25 i like too, but at their age can be troublesome with beater bar motor, change over valve assy, yoke cable and beater bar vibrating due to wear.

If the refurb option, ask how has been refurbished, (warranty) ? for example - i and most others here on a refurb would totally strip a machine, replace motor / brushes, gaskets (dc25 cyclone defo), beater bar bearings cleaned and regreased, belts replaced, clutches rebuilt, everything cleaned etc.
Beware of the refurb wipe over brigade.
As for other models / brands sebo are good, new have a 5 year ticket i believe.
Our main vac is a dc24, small and performs well but again anything mechanical will fail eventually.
Our secondary vac is a cordless v6, on its second battery but been reliable, with basic preventative maintenance.
Newer dyson models dc41 upwards i wouldn't go near but thats my personal opinion, other members may well advise differently.
Dc01, 04, 07 and 14's are built like tanks and last years.
Do not give the DC18 a second look.

The only way to fail is not to try.

That's too cheap to be reconditioned properly. Think 13% eBay/Paypal seller fees, leaves him £60. Say he paid a tenner for the raw machine, that leaves him £50. From that he has to supply any parts it needs and recondition it. It will be a used motor at that. He would be working for minimum wage at best with no profit beyond that.

There's even a "make an offer" button, so he's happy to take less.

Our DC14s on the shop floor are £115 for a reason (we don't send them out any more). Caveat emptor on eBay, Facebook or Gumtree.

I'd see if Beko or Ryevac here has one for sale. Then it will be rebuilt properly.

As said above it is difficult to recommend sellers on eBay. Most on here know what it takes to recondition properly (classic example being the internal hose on clutched models- even if visually intact it is usually worn to the extent that it is spring-less and requires replacement. Does your eBay seller know that??)
Generally speaking the classic wheeled Dysons are the ones to stick with for ease of repair (consider this especially if you buy a cheap refurb- you may still need to put some work in to it yourself before it’s up to scratch). The Ball models such as the DC25 you mention, whilst still good and serve a place in the market, suffer with more complex issues such as wiring looms, PCBs, brush head motors and excessive rattles with age, again do you know if your eBay seller has checked over these potentials?
If I can help it, these days I only try and sell my refurbs to people I know, that way I can explain what I’ve put in to each one and why they are worth X. To the untrained eye, (don’t worry OP, I’m not referring to you here) it can be difficult to see how a £100 DC25 is different to a £30 one!

Yes, i like that....
" it can be difficult to see how a £100 DC25 is different to a £30 one! "

We went for a few days break before lockdown, i won't say where - however it was market day in a town close.
Had a good look around and there was a market trader selling vacs, looked established - was selling dc25's for £109...

They didn't look that good to me, and spotted a couple of no no's - i don't know how they get away with it - i was selling mine totally refurbed, pat tested and struggled to reach £65 - hence the reason i don't bother anymore.

Where are you anditburns ? maybe there is a competent member of the forum that could repair your DC04 ?

Thanks. Got a DC14 before I saw your post - seems to work well. The only issue is that the suction is notably stronger than on my DC04. Are the DC14s ok for wool carpets?

Thanks. At the risk of asking a stupid question, how do I tell? The carpets were here before I moved in (wouldn't have chosen wool myself)

I was thinking about what I knew from here: https://sebo.co.uk/support/floorcare/carpet

Did you buy a DC14 clutched or non clutched?
