Hoover Purepower U3456 Autosense - Stripdown and Refurb

Hi!
A fairly long time ago now, I had the pleasure of having a Hoover Purepower in. But not any common old Porepower, the Mk1 Autosense version, sitting here next to the machine it replaced, the Turbopower 2 Autosense
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NNixPlMM0c
Once home, one of the common purepower issues presented itself as it fell over.
It's seen some use
But the hose was not crushed
The ends unscrew
And we can start on the machine itself.

One screw up here
and one larger one underneath and the handle pulls off
Behind the handle sits another screw
Then the bag door can be removed
The bag door only has one removable item on it, the latch
Then we can remove the other 2 screws
And lift the plate off
The PCB itself is held in with these 2 connectors
Not too scratched up

The cover unclips from the PCB
And the LED cover's pop out
The power switch is part of the PCB
Underneath that, it looks like a normal Purepower again
Snip
Machine side wires removed
Flex removed from the other
Almost as if for this very reason the plastic pegs always snap removing the snap on clips. But it's OK, as there's another one right next to it for re-assembly time...

The bag indicator sensor pops out too
We can move down now and take the bag out
And throw it closer towards the bin
Bag holder time
The tool holder on the back falls off as you do this as well
Then the Autosense sensor holder
Which takes the other tool holder off
There's the valve that works it all
And the little microphone/acoustic sensor

The whole assembly pulls out from the dirt port thanks to the dried out glue, and reveals all the crap surrounding the sensor, no wonder it took a while to change the motor speed
This connecting tube pulls out too
Then the electrical bit comes out the other way
Bag door seal was almost off anyway as the wires run behind it to the motor
Pre motor filter
Then onto the base
Height adjuster knob is first to come off

Then the 2 screws at the back allow the hood to lift off too
Upper hood seal peels off, and the belt route seals pull out
I do not like this brushroll, but the owner requested it stays as he loves it (and fitted this one to the machine) so we have to live with it...)
Out it all comes
We can push the retaining rings out now
And remove the top half from the bottom
Mmmm filth
Height adjustment knob retaining spring removed as itll fall out during washing and I'll loose it forever
Bottom felt seals removed

Bumper lifts off
Wheels now! The glamour caps pop off easily
Then with gentle bending of the soft plastic tabs (which WILL snap if your not careful) the wheels can come off the axles, and the axles withdrawn from the chassis
These wheels are scrap, and have mega wobble. Their also cracked
Front wheels lift out, and the tension spring will then fall off
Some mileage under there
The height adjustment plate lifts off when the wheels are removed
Chassis done, it's time to find the motor
Motor cover off

The air pipe for the bag light comes off now
Then the motor housing gasket
Then the motor lifts out
And we're done!
Everything got washed, dried, polished and machine buffed and waxed, and then it was time to put it back together
Much nicer now!
The fancase seal can go back on the motor
Then the motor fitted to the machine
And all the cables and pipes routed nicely

Motor cover screws on nicely, making sure the gasket isnt twisted anywhere
Then it's time for the chassis
Height adjuster plate and height adjuster knob retaining spring fitted
Wheels are a lot cleaner
And can snap in along with the retaining spring
Time for the wheels...
Which need replacing with these nice new old stock genuine Hoover ones!
Which are a bit less used...
And look amazing when fitted!

It's like fitting a NOS bin onto a DC04/05, just makes such a difference as you realise how many decades it's been since you saw them looking all clean and shiny!
Bumper can go back on now
And the felt seals
Time for a new (used) recline pedal
Spring in (if you forget this spring you may as well order another recline pedal as they break so easily trying to remove them!)
And a sound that could be it either snapping in home or snapping off confirms it's in
Retaining rings positioned for re-assembly
And if you lower the back part squarely over them they pull up and push in by themselves as you go
The **** was re-assembled

Along with a new belt
Which it needed
Hood time now
Sealed up
And dropped on
It stands up on it's own now!
Nice new pre motor filter set goes in
And the bag door seal

Time to assemble the autosense sensor now, beginning with pushing the sensor through the housing
Then fit the tube to the plate, then push the sensor in until it touches the plate end
Peekaboo. I dread to think how many of these just filled this bit up with fine dust in 6 months and they never worked correctly again!
The sensor plate snapped nicely back into place, I didn't re-glue it
And it can be dropped in and screwed to the rear tool holder
Then the bag holder
Time to get the wiring back together
Re-fitting all the bits into the lens cover as we need

And it's functional again
Then the cover plate screws on, and the bag door latch can be pushed in and the bag door fitted once more
I spent some time de-hairing the dusting brush
And skipped forward a few days now as the hose was not fully dry. I did bin the old post motor filter though
As the replacement had arrived
Which could be fitted, along with the cover

I applied some wax whilst I waited
And soon the hose was dry
It got tooled up
And we're done!

One lovely Hoover machine refurbished, the owner was super happy with it too which is always nice. I hope one day this helps someone refurbish their own Purepower. Their getting rare, especially the early ones. And their not too bad...

Nice write up as ever.
We still see a few of these come in for small repairs, and still sell a few bags for them.
